4 Ways on How to Not Throw in the Fashion Towel When it’s Freezing Out

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

We’ve all been victims of harsh, winter weather. It’s difficult to keep up with trends without sacrificing needed body heat to keep you from freezing over. Check out these great tips and tricks to stay hot (literally) and fierce this winter.

1)      Embrace your boot obsession

Boots, whether they’re leather or furry, will greatly assist in keeping your legs warm without sacrificing style. If you don’t feel like paying over $300 for a pair of Uggs, opt for a different brand like Bearpaw. They’re more winter friendly than Uggs are and cost much less. However, make sure to always use boot-protecting spray to avoid any salt stains on your boots. A new trend this year is weatherproof boots that look similar to your favorite combat boots. They’re waterproof and most have fur on the inside to keep you warm and dry as you trudge through all the snow this winter. My favorite brands are Sorel amd Sporto. You can also go for warm wool socks, which will also keep your feet dry and cozy.

2)      Layer it all out

It pays to become a layer expert in the winter. It’s totally okay to wear a tank top under a turtleneck, under a sweatshirt, or under a jacket. This way, you can shed your layers when you get back into warm buildings for class. Check out the below pictures for great examples on how to layer.

3)      Invest in good gloves, hats, and scarves

Everyone knows how hard it is to use your phone when you have giant winter gloves on. Look for the gloves equipped with touch-sensitive technology that allow you to keep your hands warm while using your phone.. My favorite brand is Isotoner. Click here to shop tons of their phone friendly gloves and mittens. As an added bonus, they keep your hands warm and cozy without being super bulky. Another thing you can do as far as accessorizing is to really experiment with different types of hats and scarves, which I promise you will make all the difference. Personally, I absolutley love wearing beanies in the winter. They look cute with any outfit and keep your head warm. As an added bonus, you wont have to worry about your hair going all over the place with harsh winter winds. You can find really cute beanies in the men’s section if you’re more into the plain knitted ones. Scarves are also great to pair with your jacket to help protect your face and neck from the cold. It’s a great way to accesorize that doubles as a warm solution!

4)      A new kind of legging

Something that I found to be super beneficial for this winter was fleece or wool-lined leggings. They look just like normal leggings but keep your legs super warm when entering the polar vortex. They also allow for breathing room so you don’t have to feel like you’re turning into a mini heater. You can find super cute styles by clicking here. Plus, they aren’t super thick so you won’t have to worry about bulky layers making your legs look “bigger.”
