What We Should All Be Thankful for This Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Lax chapter.

As Thanksgiving approaches, I recognize that it’s the first one since I’ve moved out and attended UWL. I’m thrilled to go home after being months away, and even more eager to see my family while eating delicious food that is home-cooked (and better than Whitney Center food). As I thought more about it though, seeing my family and eating a yummy meal at my Grandparents’ house is amazing, but I’m thankful for so much more beyond Thanksgiving Day itself (and the Black Friday deals to follow!).

Obviously on Thanksgiving, I recognize the large blessings in my life; Jesus, family, friends, a home, health. These are important, and each person has their own “big things” in life that they’re thankful for. I encourage you, though, to also look to the smaller aspects of your life. This type of reflection is very cleansing, and can make you view the world in a new light.

Below I have some “little things” that my family and friends, along with myself, are thankful for that can sometimes be overlooked. If you have the time, read them over and see if any of them can be related to your life. This winter season, I hope for joy to be spread throughout the world even greater than ever before. I believe kindness begins from within; evaluate the blessings in your life that make you happy, no matter how small. And go out of your way to help someone, knowing that those important things you’re thankful for lie within your heart.

I’m thankful for…

…a winter coat to wear when I walk to my classes on brisk, winter days.

…the ability to get an education and stay active.

…the new Taylor Swift album, Reputation.

…the University bus system to give rides to students who don’t have vehicles on campus.

…my good health.

…my friends’ parents, because they brought my besties into the world.

…the people that clean the campus bathrooms.

…the workers who shovel snow so that I don’t have to walk to class in it.

…the new beginnings and experiences I’ve had.

…traditions; it gives me something to look forward to every year.

…the ability to live in such a supportive community.

…the beauty of sunsets and sunrises.

…a warm place to call home.

…the ability to learn.

…fuzzy mittens and hot cocoa.

…coffee to keep me going after staying up all night!

…love itself.

…music.

…flowers.

…the first snow fall in the winter season.

…new challenges that push me to be better.

…having my own dorm room.

…hand sanitizer because college is infested with germs.

…crosswalks so I don’t get hit by cars.

…sunshine to brighten my day as I walk to class.

…letters from my friends and family.

…technology that gives me the ability to communicate with others.

…tutors and writing centers to help me with school work.

…a healthy body that allows for me to go on a run.

…a calculator to help me to solve my math problems.

…a church to attend every Sunday.

…the friends I’ve made in my dorm and others across campus.

…student loans that allow me to go to college.

…sales to save money.

…my mom’s hugs.

…cows for milk that makes ice cream.

…the holidays so I can go home and see my friends from high school.

…freedom to make our own choices.

…high school friends that keep in touch.

…my cat to snuggle with.

…kisses from my dog.

…a quiet place to study.

…blankets to keep me warm.

…Dr. Pepper.

Hopefully this list has inspired you in some way, no matter how small. I wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving; I’m certainly thankful for everyone who is reading this article. God Bless!
