Seven Things to Know Before Going Vivid

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Lax chapter.

I work at a salon and am around new hair trends, products and techniques all the time. However, also working at a salon can by very dangerous–You always want to make sure you are staying up with the trends! That trend lately is vivid colors. You might think to yourself: But vivid hair color seems so attainable! They are attainable (and fun!), but they are also a lot of work to maintain.

I wanted to share with you my secrets. I fell so deeply in love with my vivid color hair. However, here are seven things no one will tell when choosing to go vivid!

1. You Should Financially Prepare for the Upkeep of your Dreamy Vivid.

Vivids are gorgeous, but they begin to fade in as little as three weeks! Here are a few questions you should ask yourself as you consider vivid colors: How often can you revive the color? Are you okay with the fading process and, possibly, uncomfortable fading colors? How does your wallet feel about it? Something to consider.

2. Is your Hair’s Integrity Going to be Damaged by the Lightening (Bleaching) Process?

Your hair will get bleached! I can almost promise you; You will bleach your hair to get the most vivid of colors. Secondly, is your hair strong enough to go through that process? If not, look into using Anti-Snap by Redken!

3. Could you Dedicate a Significant amount of Time to the Vivid Color Trend?

Let’s face it–it’s addictive. Once you start with a little vivid color you will slowly want to keep adding more. By working at a salon I have complete freedom with what I want to do with my hair, however, not everyone is that lucky. Will this fit your lifestyle in the long run?

4. Can you Afford the Products to Maintain the Vibrancy?

You should invest in a nice sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner and moisturizing mask for the long haul of your vivid hair. If you think about how much your coloring service costs, you should know that’s only part of getting the job done. In order to make your service last to its full potential, you need to be equipped with the right tools to take care of your hair at home.

5. Is your Hair a Good Candidate for a Vibrant Color Service?

What is your natural hair color? The best lighteners (bleaches) in the industry are really designed to lift up to 7 levels. This could take several processes, a long visit and depends on pre-existing hair color you may have.

6. Which Vivid Color Would go Best with your Skin-Tone?

I have a lot of cool tones in my skin, so when I chose to go with violet it worked out perfectly. Does your skin have fair, warm tones or cool tones? How do you determine this? Check your foundation and the skin on your forearm to determine if your skin has more warmth or coolness.

7. Know That you Will be Crowned a Trend-Setter.

Most importantly: having vivid colors in my hair gave me a lot of confidence. It is fun and daring and so out of the box. I got compliments from strangers in the market, clients and my friends.

If you have ever been curious in vivid colors, I recommend having a 15 minute consultation with a stylist at a salon of your choice prior to booking an appointment. Remember, there is a lot of time and money you have to invest in your hair to maintain vivid colors, so be money smart!
