Oktoberfest: Now That You’re 21 Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Lax chapter.

If you go to UWL, you know Oktoberfest ranks highly next to Halloween and Christmas even before you’re 21. However, once you’re finally legal, the La Crosse holiday turns into a whole new world as far as activities go. Here are some ideas for you + your friends to try this Oktoberfest (but remember, always watch out for one another):

1.) Craft Beer Night: Thursday @ 5PM Northside Oktoberfest Grounds

If you’re looking to appreciate more of the quality alcoholic beverages offered during Oktoberfest and steer clear of those darn college favorites (Busch Lattes and Natty Light), come sample craft beverages from over 40 different vendors at Craft Night! While this event is one of the more expensive ones of the weekend, it’s one well worth it. Money is irrelevant when it comes to good beer!

2.) Tapping of the Golden Keg: Friday, 9-12AM–Oktoberfest Grounds open at 9AM, tapping @ 11AM.

Start off this year right by attending the tapping of the Golden Keg. This Oktoberfest favorite is the perfect way to kick of the festivities and get in the German holiday spirit!

3.) KEGS AND EGGS: Saturday @ 6AM, Howies + Brothers Bar

Not a morning person but looking for a reason to start the celebration early? Kegs and Eggs is the answer! With awesome college friendly deals, these parties are sure to be something to remember! Getting up before the sun does is hard, but it’s easy when good beer, delicious food, and prizes are in store. Make sure to get there early, this is a La Crosse hit!

4.) Maple Leaf Parade: Saturday, 10AM-2PM Oktoberfest Grounds to Downtown La Crosse

Want to do something more than sitting + celebrating at home but don’t want to break the bank? Go to the Maple Leaf Parade! While this crowd seems doesn’t always seem to be college aged students, there is so much to offer for everyone! Bring a game of cornhole/bag toss, food to grill out, and your favorite beverages, and you and your friends are guaranteed to have a great time. Watch all the different floats + participate in some top-quality people watching, it won’t disappoint.

5.) Do-It-Yourself: Bloody + Mimosa Bar

If you’re more of a homebody, or would rather save your money for other things in your life, try making your own bloody and mimosa bar! Buy the champagne and vodka + bloody mix and orange juice (try different juices or add-ins for a fun switch up) and of course all the yummy fixings–pickles, sausages, cheese, celery, olives and berries to start your own tradition! Make a fun playlist and wake your friends up early to bring the party to your home.
