The 8 Characters of La Crosse’s First Spring Days

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Lax chapter.

Throughout the cold Wisconsin winters in La Crosse, students don’t spend much time hanging around outside on campus. But when we finally get those first few warm days of the year, campus comes alive as everyone wants to get a taste of spring. As you walk around, you’ll probably run into most of the following people.

1. The Napper

They were going to nap anyway, so why not do it outside? UWL has wide open spaces and plenty of trees that are great for putting up a portable hammock to enjoy the weather and relax at the same time.

2. The Hiker

Although the bluffs are extremely muddy from recently melted snow, this person has been stuck inside all winter long and cannot wait another single day before getting a hike in.

3. The “Let’s Play Catch”

On this rare warm day, Drake and Eagle fields are always full of groups of friends playing catch. This person is the first one out on the lawn leading a game of ultimate frisbee and blasting music that can be heard from all surrounding dorms.

4. The Lazy Eagle Hall Resident

When there’s no more snow on the ground, there is a distinct path of worn grass through Eagle field leading toward Whitney. Because why waste 3 extra seconds to walk on the sidewalk?

5. The Student

They hate it when school prevents them from enjoying the nice weather to its full extent, so this person packs up their backpack and throws down a blanket to enjoy the sun and get their studying in. It’s the best of both worlds . . . ish.

6. The Snapchatter

This person posts a picture of something outside on their story using the temperature filter and some caption about how nice it is. This person is all of us.

7. The “What do I wear?”

On the first few days of spring, Wisconsinites never know how to dress. To their credit, Wisconsin weather has been known to serve up all 4 seasons throughout just a few days. To solve this problem, this person plans their outfits for every season at once. Jacket with shorts? Might be necessary. Socks and sandals? Absolutely.

8. The Grump

Despite the glory and wonder of the first warm Wisconsin day, someone always has to be the break the news that spring isn’t actually here to stay yet. In fact, it’s probably going to snow tomorrow. But when it warms up again, all the same characters will come to replace the grump once again.
