My Life is GrUV: Five Steps to Branching Out

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVM chapter.

College is the perfect time to try new things and branch out.  Nobody will judge you for trying something different, and at a school as big as UVM, there are plenty of options. Whether you are just starting your freshman year at UVM, or are coming back as an upperclassman, these tips will give you ideas on how to branch out and meet new people!

1.     Meet the people on your floor. Now is a great time to become friendly with all the new people in your dorm, and there is no better way than leaving your door open and introducing yourself to people when you see them in the hallway! Who knows, maybe you’ll meet your best friend here!

2.     Join something. With over 150 clubs at UVM you are bound to find something you like, and these can be a great way to try something new, and make friends. Don’t worry if you didn’t get a chance to sign up for something at the activities fair! Most clubs are always welcoming new members and you can contact the members through the UVM Lynx.

3.     Talk to someone in class. Class is such a great place to meet new people, especially if you don’t go into the class knowing anybody in it! Just sit down next to someone who looks friendly and start chatting. In my math class freshman year I didn’t know anybody, and knew that I would need help, so I sat next to another girl and started asking her questions. We ended up becoming study partners and we are still friends today!

4.     Ditch the b*tch face. I know that for a lot of people, myself included, it takes a conscious effort to keep from looking angry while you walk around. As hard as it may be to look approachable, it definitely will pay off! Say hi to people you recognize, even if you’re not sure they remember you, and make the extra effort to be friendly while you’re walking around. If you can keep a smile on your face while in public acquaintances will begin saying hi to you as you pass each other. This is a great way to get to know people better and turn your friend from class into a real friend.

5.     Try something new. My final and most important tip for branching out at UVM is to try something new! College is the best time to start something that you’ve never done before. There is no way that you will be the only newcomer, and UVM-ers are extremely welcoming. By finally signing up for the Water Polo team or Mock Trial, or another activity you’ve been dying to try you will not only have fun, but you will also meet people with similar interests.

However you choose to branch out, UVM is a great place to be doing it. By getting involved and making the most of your time here, these can be some of the best years of your life.
