This summer, the “coastal grandmother” aesthetic took over my Tiktok and Pinterest feeds. The classic style is influenced by summers in New England spent by the water and out of the city. The look itself is crisp yet comfortable, ruled by shades of blue, neutrals, and white. After all, what’s more classic than a blue and white color scheme? It’s nautical without trying too hard and inspired by impromptu beach trips and intimate dinners outside– the best parts of summer.

This is a style I hope doesn’t get forgotten as the air gets chillier and the leaves start changing color. How can this overall vibe be transitioned into fall fashion? Here are my essential fall pieces to emulate your favorite coastal grandmother:

  1. A straight leg jean.

This classic style relies on pieces that fall in the range of well-fitting to drapey. I recently purchased what have now become my favorite jeans from Rollas. These jeans are fitted in the thigh and become relaxed all while still holding its structure. This style looks good on everyone and is super versatile.

  1. Sweaters!

In general, sweaters are my favorite item of clothing. This look is very sweater-friendly, which brings me so much joy. Any oversized or drapey sweater in soft tones is very classic, and a very chill girl fall.

  1. A slipper-type shoe

This adds to the illusion of “Oh, I just threw this on”. Birkenstock Bostons are SO in right now which is actually pretty upsetting, since they’re now sold out everywhere and I really want a pair. I think the mini Uggs or any sherpa/fuzzy Birkenstock is perfect for this look. Basically- fuzzy shoes are perfect for this seasonal transition.

If you’re like me and love classic yet cozy style, I highly suggest familiarizing yourself with the coastal grandmother.
