How To Survive a Long Distance Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVM chapter.

With cuffing season surrounding all of us, you might feel a little lost if your significant other is abroad, at a different school, or on a long vacation. How are you supposed to go days without them, let alone months? Wherever they might be, or however long they will be there, your relationship does not have to end. Here are some tips on how to stay close with your partner even though you’re miles away.

1. Set some ground rules

You don’t want any surprises when dealing with a long distance relationship. Discuss beforehand some of the needs you and your partner have. Are you exclusive? How committed are you? When is the best time to talk/FaceTime? This may seem weird to think about, especially if you have been in a relationship for a while, but it is so important.

2. Keep them updated

Always say good morning and good night to your partner. This simple gesture turned habit can make you feel closer. Take the time to tell them about your day and ask about theirs. Tell them about a funny thing you saw at work today, a movie you recommend, or send them memes that made you think of them. Just because they are far away doesn’t mean you don’t keep them in the loop anymore!

3. Get Creative!

Texting can get boring after a while! Make sure you make time for long phone calls and FaceTimes. Send them a surprise through the mail, like an Edible Arrangement. It doesn’t have to be big! Send them their favorite coffee that you know they’re low on, or their favorite candy.

4. Have things to look forward to

Keep a countdown app on your phone and check it when you feel lonely. This makes the days go by faster and soon enough you’ll only have a couple left! Have a little celebration when 10 days go by, and celebrate with an extra long FaceTime or write out a long text to make them smile.

5. Visit!

Get that bus ticket- it’s worth it!! In the days leading up to a visit, talk about the things you want to do together. If you’re visiting a new city, allow them to be your tour guide, or take them to a new spot in your town. Make a plan to finally see each other and remind yourself why they’re worth the wait!

Enjoy your time together- whether it’s virtual or in person!
