How I’m Making My Last Semester The Best One Yet

It really does feel like just yesterday that I toured the University of Vermont for the first time, yet here we are. My last semester of college. It’s impossible not to think about post-grad life and jobs during this time. “What’s your plan after graduation?” seems to be my most dreaded question. Maybe you already have a job lined up or a plan, but it’s totally okay to have no idea what you’re doing; I don’t have a clue. If you’re feeling overwhelmed that this is the last time you’ll be in school for the rest of your life, here’s what I am planning to do to make it all worthwhile.

Though going to class is obviously important, in my opinion, spending time with friends is of even more importance right now. This is the last time we’ll all be in the same place for a while, or ever. Soaking in every moment with friends is definitely one of my priorities. Whether it’s a night out on the town or even simple things like movie nights on the couch, savoring that time with friends is very important to me during this season.

Another rule I’m implementing for myself is saying yes to everything. I want to push myself outside my comfort zone and try things I usually talk myself out of. Trying something new can look like skiing even if I know I’ll fall 100 times, or saying yes when someone asks if I want to go out even though my instinct is to stay in sweatpants. This is my last chance to take advantage of all the opportunities that college provides.

On the other hand, I’m learning that rest is just as important. I don’t want to spend my final months completely burnt out. Enjoying my last semester doesn’t have to mean being busy 24/7. Slow mornings, walks around campus, journaling, reading, and taking breaks without guilt are all part of making this time feel meaningful.

Most of all, I’m working to stay present. It’s easy to get caught up in worrying about the unknown, but I don’t want to miss these little moments searching for the next. College ending is bittersweet, but I’m choosing to look at it as a beginning instead of an ending. If I can leave with good memories, stronger friendships, and at least some sense of who I am and what I want, I’ll know I did something right.
