In the midst of all the stress, there has been only one thing keeping me sane: all the shows and movie releases coming this fall.
I’m one of those people who needs to have some form of media on their mind at all times. It keeps me grounded and reminds me that school is not the only thing in my life. Sometimes, it’s okay to take a break, forget about your assignments for a little while, and binge a fun show or movie.
Luckily for me, this fall is packed with releases I’ve either been waiting months for or randomly discovered while scrolling through social media. So, with that, let me share some of the shows and movies taking over my watchlist this fall.
1. Crew Girl
Netflix — Release Date: September 10th.
Crew Girl follows a 16-year-old female rower, played by Miku Martineau, who becomes the coxswain of a dysfunctional all-boys rowing team at an elite prep school.
I just finished binging the entire show, and let me tell you, it was entertaining. And I just love Miku Martineau. I mean, how can you not? The girl is so cool.
I will say, though, I HATE love triangles, and this is yet another show with a somewhat poorly written one. People on TikTok seem pretty split over who she should end up with, but in my opinion, there is one very clear answer.
2. The Love Hypothesis
Prime Video — Release Date: September 23
The Love Hypothesis follows two scientists who end up in a fake relationship after an impulsive kiss, forcing them to test their theories about love — and each other.
I’ve been waiting all summer for this. When I tell you that the second I heard they were making this into a movie, I immediately reread the book.
I honestly wasn’t the biggest fan of the book when I first read it, but nothing gets me more excited than a wonderfully cast book adaptation. Plus, it feels like it’s been forever since I’ve seen Lili Reinhart in a major movie.
The marketing leading up to this release has also been incredible. It feels like every week I go on social media and get another reminder that the movie is almost here. The excitement just keeps building!
3. Drawn Together
Prime Video — Release Date: September 9
Drawn Together follows Marfil Cortés, the daughter of a Spanish tycoon, who is placed under the protection of bodyguard Sebastián Moore after her mysterious kidnapping in New York. Despite their completely different personalities, an attraction begins to develop between them.
I’ve only watched half of this movie so far, but there is something so ominous about it. It’s one of those romance movies that makes you feel slightly unsettled because you can tell there is some deep, dark secret you haven’t figured out yet.
I’m excited to finish it, but maybe when I have a higher attention span, and I’m not trying to multitask with homework while watching. Since the movie is in Spanish, it definitely requires a little more attention from me, although there is some English sprinkled in here and there.
4. You + Me Against the world
Prime Video — Release Date: September 18
You + Me Against the World follows Alma Lancaster, who hides her filmmaking ambitions from her wealthy family while they believe she is attending law school. While creating a student film, she falls for rebel Vadim Arcadi — but someone is watching them and could expose secrets that threaten to destroy everything.
I have almost no idea what this movie is actually going to be like. But I do know that Prime Video knows how to make a good romance or rom-com.
Every time I see that another one is about to drop, I have my snacks ready. Best believe I will tune in the second I see a new release, regardless of the language.
This time, it’s in French, and I don’t think I’ve ever even watched a French movie before. So, I guess there’s a first time for everything!
5. Verity
In Theaters – Release Date: October 2
Verity follows Lowen Ashleigh, a writer hired to ghostwrite for renowned author Verity Crawford. Her assignment takes a dark turn when she discovers disturbing autobiographical notes written by Verity. As Lowen becomes more entangled in Verity’s life and marriage, she struggles to separate fiction from reality, manipulation from attraction, and opportunity from obsession.
Colleen Hoover’s books are very hit or miss for me, but Verity definitely left an impression the first time I read it. As ominous and anxiety-inducing as it was, I already know I’ll be watching the movie ASAP when it comes out.
With a cast like this, I feel like it’s either going to be amazing or absolutely terrible — there will be no in-between. Let’s just hope they stay true to the book.
With all of these releases coming out so close together, my fall watchlist is officially packed. Between romance, mystery, book adaptations, and the occasional love triangle I’ll inevitably complain about, I clearly won’t be running out of things to watch anytime soon.
And honestly? With midterms, assignments, and everything else that comes with the fall semester, I think I deserve a little binge-watching.
