Starting a new year can be overwhelming. You need to start organizing yourself for a variety of responsibilities, ranging from what clubs to join to handling the workload that will (if it hasn’t already) come your way. Here are a couple of tips to help you handle the obstacles that you’ll be confronted with…
One of the most important things to do is create an environment in which you feel comfortable. Dr. Fred Jones explains that students (in this case he’s talking about elementary students- but it still applies to college!) “Don’t do well in an impersonal environment.” You’ll excel a lot faster if you get to know the people around you. Whether you make five friends or fifty friends, it doesn’t matter; just make sure you know you’re surrounding yourself with quality people. It’ll change the way you see your surroundings, especially if you’re having trouble adjusting!
Another important thing to remember is not to overload your schedule. A lot of people forget that there are only 24 hours in a day. So, make sure to be pushing yourself to join clubs, organizations, etc., but still leave some time for you to rest and take that much needed “me” time. The valuable principle to remember is that you need to treat your body as a temple, which means take care of yourself! If you don’t do that, you won’t make it past the semester.
One last thing to point out is the importance of placing your education first. Being able to attend college is an honor, and one that should be taken advantage of to its fullest extent. How many times in your adult life will you be able to learn for a living? Make sure you’re taking classes that really fascinate you and that push you to want to be the best student you can possibly be.
College is a lot of fun- it’s varied fun: there are social aspects, athletic aspects, educational aspects, and more. Make sure to make your experience one that you’ll never forget and make these four years count because before you know it, it’ll be a new year! Â
