A British Girls Guide to Halloween in America

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

Halloween is really not a big deal where I come from. Where I used to live, people would turn away kids that dressed up instead of the usual ‘greet them with candy’. The stores are not at all festive, and by the age of 18, most students are more into partying than dressing up for this occasion. This year, I wanted to do Halloween the right way and go all out. Here is what I learned after this Halloweekend!

1. Anything Goes

Anything goes, and by this I mean outfit choices! You can be wearing as much or as little as you want and no one is going to question your outfit. Want to dress up as a polar bear in only a white bra, underwear and ears? That’s fine. Want to dress head to toe as someone from the purge? That’s perfectly acceptable too!

2. People Will Scare You

People will try to scare you. This includes the camouflaged man hiding the bushes, the 25 frat guys dressed up as the Grim Reaper… no one is safe. Just remember behind that mask is just a college student. (On a side note, always stay in a group and stay safe whenever out and especially when drinking.)

3. Blood. Lot’s of Blood

Fake blood can start to look real if you drink too much. Remember that when you look at your friends ‘burned skin’ and freak out thinking you need to go to the emergency room!

4. It’s a Commercial Holiday

Shopping centers will take Halloween seriously too! They will have decorations and costume competitions. Enter them! It’s a great way to win gift cards.

5. Trick-or-Treat

And lastly you’re never too old for trick-or-treating! It’s free candy and we’re college students, so take advantage of free things.

Long story short, I’ve decided that I love Halloween here! I get to dress up as something that is so far from who I am, and I  have already started planning next years outfits!
