Anne Moenning ’16

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

Name: Anne Moenning

Year: 3rd

Hometown: Punta Gorda, FL

Major: Systems Engineering

1.     What are you involved in around grounds?

Besides all things Systems Engineering related? (Yay for my hardest semester ever!). I live in a house with 9 other girls, so that’s a lot of my social life. I’m a teaching assistant, I research in the Robotics, Automation and Dance Lab, and I lead a first year girls’ small group through InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. I also LOVE going to UVA sporting events, and I occasionally show up at random dance parties.

2.     How would you describe your personal style?

It’s a combination of Lorelai Gilmore with a less punk version of Ellen Page.

3.     What is your go-to outfit for spring?

I am a sundress person. My go-to outfit for spring, besides my beloved Nike shorts, is a simple, flowy sundress that I can wear with either my flip-flops, TOMS, or cowgirl boots. Or all three at once, if it’s a REALLY good sundress.

4.   What events or activities are you looking forward to this semester?

Well, spring break is over, so next on the docket to look forward to is probably the Resto Ball! The Restoration Ball is this really awesome outdoors, black tie, event that the Jefferson Society presents every year. It’s super fun, my friends all dress up and make dinner with our dates beforehand. I’m also looking forward to doing a sunrise hike at Humpback Rocks on Easter morning… that’s been a tradition for a few years now.

5.   How do you take advantage of the warmer weather in Charlottesville?

Walk EVERYWHERE. Charlottesville is beautiful in the spring, and if you’re like many of the students here, your free time can be sparse. So, I like to capitalize on all the free time I can get outside. Nap time? Hammock near the Dell. Date night? Have a picnic in a Garden. Free Saturday? Go hike the rock scramble at Old Rag. Fridays After Five on the Downtown Mall are the coolest – I love going to those. Anything that can be done outside, I try to do outside. Charlottesville rocks.

6.   What advice would you give to the incoming class of 2019?

My advice to you, incoming first years, is to invest yourself at your school. Your college years are going to fly by just like high school did and even though school is hard, these will probably be some of the most fun times of your life. Figure out what you love to do and DO IT. Get to know your hall-mates or suite-mates. Don’t be afraid to be yourself. At the end of the day, go to bed smiling. No matter how hard your day has been, no matter how stressed you feel, remember that it’s all going to be okay.

Sarah is a fourth year media studies major and Spanish minor at UVA who is admittedly way too obsessed with pop culture.  Wahoowa!
