5 Things You Shouldn’t Be Ashamed Of

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

1. Dropping that class. You know yourself. If by the end of the first week of classes your professor already isn’t making sense, or if you just know that your Friday 8am discussion is going to be a weekly struggle, it’s okay to say “nope”! You might feel like you’re copping out, but for most classes (especially electives), you want to know you’re going to be excited about the material, the professor, and the work.

2. Not dropping that class. Last semester I took a science class that’s notorious for being hard and a lot of work, but I was really interested in it (neural basis of behavior, amirite??). It was a total change-up from my usual humanities classes and did end up being quite difficult, but I loved the subject and I earned my mediocre grade with no ragrets. Don’t be afraid to stretch yourself for a class you’re passionate about.

3. Needing some alone time. This rings especially true during the first few weeks back to school. It’s always exciting to reunite with all of your friends, but it can also be overwhelming and emotionally exhausting. You’re going to be able to spend time with your people all year, so don’t make yourself feel bad about saying no to a dinner invite and spending the night recharging.

4. Rocking an outfit that got the “no” vote from your friends. We all value our friends’ opinions, but they don’t have to dictate our choices. If you’re pumped about a cool edgy outfit that your friends aren’t as enthusiastic about, just go for it. They should just love you more for your individuality and confidence!

5. Starting a conversation with a stranger.  So your friend brought you to a party, dinner, get together, whatever. She stepped outside for a phone call, and you’re left awkwardly alone. You could scroll through Instagram until she gets back, or you could introduce yourself to someone you don’t know. They might not become your new best friend, but you’ll gain an acquaintance and some self-confidence. Go get ‘em!
