5 HBO Shows (Other Than Game of Thrones) That You Should Be Watching

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

Yes, it’s true. We may need to wait two years for season 8 of Game of Thrones! But have no fear. HBO has some great shows to hold you over until then.

1. Westworld

One of my favorite thrillers on TV, Westworld is about a technologically-advanced Wild West–themed amusement park populated by computer-developed “hosts.” These robots are so sophisticated that they begin to develop real human instincts and feelings; you can see where this might be a problem. The show was the most-watched first season of an HBO original series ever, and definitely lives up to the hype.

2.  Insecure

This is a hysterical and eye-opening comedy that explores the modern black female experience. It follows two best friends, Issa and Molly, on their life journeys after graduating from UCLA. The show has earned many nominations and awards, including Issa Rae’s Golden Globe nomination for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy.”

3. Silicon Valley

Considered one of the most underrated comedy shows on TV, Silicon Valley is a great way to get you laughing. It’s about 5 men who found a startup company in Silicon Valley. The show has been both nominated and awarded at the Emmys, Critics’ Choice Awards and Golden Globes. Who doesn’t love a good comedy bashing the tech scene?

4. Veep

An incredible political satire comedy television series, Veep explores the life of Selina Meyer. She is a former Maryland Senator who, in the start of the series, is the Vice President, or “Veep” to a President she has a tough time getting along with. Basically, it features a group of the most creative and mean people in the world each trying to come up with the best insults. The show has won a whopping 55 awards, including 5 Emmys in 2017.

5. Big Little Lies

This 7-episode miniseries may be the perfect show to watch over Fall Break. It follows the “perfect lives” of three first grade mothers, and a murder that unravels them. The miniseries raked in 16 Emmy Award nominations with 8 wins, including the award for “Outstanding Limited Series.” How could you go wrong with a show featuring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Shailene Woodley?
