Covid-19 has undeniably made so many things difficult. All of my classes this semester are online so I find myself spending hour upon hours cooped up in my apartment. In an effort to spend more time outside, I’ve been trying out different study spaces outside. Here are my top 5 outside study spots on grounds.

Mad Bowl

Situated between some of the large fraternity and sorority houses, Madison Bowl or “Mad Bowl” as students call it is a nice, large grassy field. Mad Bowl is a super common area for students to be throwing a frisbee, playing Spikeball, or just hanging with friends. It can be noisy at times, but is a good study space option for students living on Rugby Road.

The Lawn/Rotunda

The Lawn is the most iconic location on grounds. It is located at the heart of the university so it is easily accessible to all students. Members from the Charlottesville community also come to enjoy the beautiful Rotunda and scenery. Because there can be lots of foot traffic, the Lawn is not the most ideal place to get tons of homework done, however its amazing atmosphere makes it a great place for study groups.

The Amphitheater

The Amphitheater is located on central Grounds. Its proximity to classrooms makes it the perfect spot for getting work done in between classes. If you’re like me and all of your classes are online, the Amphitheater is a great place to study because it is generally pretty quiet. Plus, the food trucks park right next to it, making this outside study spot even better!

Lambeth Field

Located off of Rugby road, Lambeth Field is a great study location. It has plenty of space for you to lay down a blanket, set up a hammock, find a picnic table, or just simply sit under the Colonnades. It is super common for students to exercise on the field, however it is so spread out that it rarely causes distractions. Yes, it might be a lengthy walk, but trust me it’s worth it!

The Dell

The Dell is the ultimate study space on grounds. The Dell is a super quiet spot located just below Old Dorms. It has a small field, with plenty of benches and picnic tables to set up your study space. If you need to take a break from working, you can take a quick walk around the pond. The Dell is my favorite study spot because it’s super pretty especially in the evening, and Charlottesville residents will often bring their pups over to the field to play!

I hope this semester while the weather is still warm you try out some new outdoor study spaces!
