3 Ethical Fashion Companies You Should Be Supporting

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

A new fashion trend is shaking up the industry, and it’s calling into question everything you ever thought you knew about fashion manufacturing, selling and buying. This new idea is called “slow fashion,” a reaction to the fast fashion movement that characterizes the fashion industry today. The idea behind slow fashion is that instead of the focus being on making large amounts of inexpensive clothing pieces that follow short-lived trends, these slow fashion companies emphasize the value in creating clothing pieces that are high-quality, sustainable, and bring value to the lives of the workers that make the garments. All of the companies on the list below are dedicated to the ethical treatment of their workers, sustainable manufacturing practices for the environment, and the production of stylish clothing pieces everyone will want to wear!

1. Everlane is a clothing and accessory company that prides itself on having complete transparency with customers. It shows the factories where the clothing is produced, and values the integrity of the factory owners. Everlane also strives to provide quality clothing without the markups of designer pieces, which they say typically can be marked up 8x by the time they reach the customer! Also, their clothes are bomb! I personally own their Cashmere Sweater, and wear it all the time!

2. Fair Anita is strictly an accessory company that works with local women artisans in countries like Jordan, Peru, Ethiopia, India and more! These jobs give women support and financial freedom, while providing unique and high quality jewelry to fashionistas like you and me! It’s a win-win situation. I own the Dessa Ring from Fair Anita, and it is so special to me to know that my purchase helped support another woman.

3. Liberti USA is the company for you if you want luxury jewelry that supports a current cause. Their handcrafted jewelry goes to supporting resettled refugees in the United States, and their jewelry is absolutely stunning! I recommend their <1 collection. The pieces have an incredible amount of detail, purpose and passion crafted into them.
