No, You Do Not Have to Buy Every Skincare Product Recommended on TikTok

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTSA chapter.

I personally love being part of “skintok,” which is the side of TikTok that talks all about skincare. I can honestly say I enjoy watching Hyram’s content amoung other similar accounts, but as a skincare junkie, I learned to restrain myself from purchasing the many items they recommend daily.

It took me some time to curate my skincare routine that I will swear by for the rest of my life, and now I am pretty proud to say that it mainly consists of 5 products (not including sunscreen). I will admit that at one point, I felt that I needed to incorporate more products after seeing that some people had elaborate 12-step routines. But, given my skin needs, I felt that a limited amount of products was just right for me.

As a general rule, it is recommended that your skin is never deprived of a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. People who are new to skincare tend to overwhelm their skin by applying too many products at once, and although I’m no professional, I assume that’s the main cause of skin irritation or burns. I have also had an unpleasurable outcome when I temporarily added two steps to my routine, thus how I learned my lesson in knowing what is right for me, and the importance of keeping your routine relatively simple. Its perfectly understandable that some feel that a lengthy skincare routine addresses their skin concerns better, but if you feel that your routine is not working for you despite buying all the products recommended by your favorite guru, it is time to step back and cut some products out.

Since I’m not a dermatologist, I will not recommend any skincare products. Instead, the best advice I can offer (without jeopardizing your skin) is to listen to your dermatologist, and not impulse buy every skincare product recommended on your fyp on TikTok. Your wallet, and your skin, will thank you.
