Let’s Get Nerdy – Anime Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTSA chapter.

Okay so anyone who knows me knows that I’m an anime junkie. I love anime, it’s basically the only thing I’ll watch and if you call it a cartoon then you can…

So, for my people who haven’t watched anime before or maybe you’re looking for something new to watch, I’ve created a list of 10 anime. This is not a top 10 list, it’s just a list of anime that I enjoy personally!

1.     Naruto and Naruto Shippuden

I know I said this is not a top 10 list, but I’m gonna tell you right now that Naruto and Naruto Shippuden are the best anime ever. These are the classics of classics, nothing is better than them. You may have seen it on Cartoon Network as a kid, but it doesn’t matter if you have or have not because you need to watch it again. I hate to be THAT person but I’m going to be that person: you need to watch Naruto and Naruto Shippuden as an adult to truly appreciate this legendary anime. I must mention that this is the first anime to really get me rattled; I’ve been hyped, mad, sad and everything in between watching Naruto.

Now Naruto and Naruto Shippuden are both about, you guessed it, Naruto. The unique thing about it though is that just about every character that you continuously see throughout the anime has their own story that gets told. Not only do they have their own story, their story ties in with the whole plot.

Start off by watching Naruto after you finish that then watch Naruto Shippuden and then you can watch Boruto. After you finish watching Naruto Shippuden come talk to me and we can talk about my favorite anime character of all time Itachi Uchiha.

2.     Tokyo Ghoul

If you’re looking for something a little dark then Tokyo Ghoul is for you. I’m a fan of dark and gory anime and Tokyo Ghoul was just what I was looking for. It’s not incredibly dark but it will do the trick. It’s a short anime with a great story line. Watch and enjoy it.

3.     Psycho Pass

Psycho Pass is an anime that gives you a little bit of a dark feel but also provides a little mystery and suspicion. If you talk to someone who loves anime like me, they’ve most likely watched Psycho Pass. If you’re a conspiracy theorist then you should like Psycho Pass, you can possibly envision our society becoming just like what you’ve seen here.

4.     Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a great anime. You get a nice taste of action as these two brothers try to use their alchemy to bring their mom back to life. You witness them go on a journey and eventually become heroes. You’re going to have a few shocking moments throughout this anime. They have a few movies that you can watch too but first, watch the series.

5.     Claymore

If you want to watch a short anime that’s worth a second season but doesn’t have it then Claymore is for you. I know that sounds kind of like torture but Claymore is definitely worth it. You get to see many female characters although they’re not going to be a strong, business woman that’s a role model for young women. Instead claymore provides a great amount of action with a tiny bit of touching moments. This anime is based about hybrid warriors that are half “youma” and are sent out to kill full bred “youma”

6.     Attack on Titan

Perhaps I should have put Attack on Titan at the top of the list but like I said this is not a top 10 list. However, I say that because Attack on Titan is a great starter anime. Attack on Titan was what sprung me into anime as an adult, of course I had watched Sailor Moon, Case Closed and other anime as a kid but I didn’t view those as anime. If you want to see a lot of blood, killing and a crazy storyline with too many plot twists then Attack on Titan is for you. Also, if you’d like to see a few kick ass characters (Captain Levi and Mikasa) go ahead and turn this on. 10/10 will yell at their screen when watching.

I will tell you that there are only 2 seasons of Attack on Titan out and it is still not finished. We waited about 3 years to get season 2 from the creators of Attack on Titan which tells you they’re very slow to put things out. If you’re looking for an anime that you can start and finish completely, Attack on Titan may not be for you but if you want to keep the suspicion rolling then watch it. You can read the manga online and you’ll get to see a lot more information than you would by watching it, I was tempted but I’d rather scream at my screen than a manga so there’s that.

7.     Akame Ga Kill

Another action-packed anime with quite a bit of badass characters that you’ll enjoy (a few of them female too). Watch this anime as the Night Raid team fights corruption. You get to see a lot of fighting and who doesn’t like to watch that? Akame Ga Kill is only 24 episodes long and is available in dub too, so get your watch on.

8.     Death Note

The above gif says it all. Honestly, Death Note starts off pretty slow which is why I had to watch the first few episodes a couple times because it couldn’t keep my attention. After you get past the boring part, you see that Death Note is really good. Watch a kid go on a power trip that leads to his own demise throughout Death Note. If you want to get a little ticked off but not too much then this is a good watch. I believe that Netflix made a live action movie out of it so if you’re into that sort of thing then that’s available too. I don’t appreciate live action and would rather just watch the anime. But you have two options available for you.

9.     Assassination Classroom

Assassination Classroom is probably the most relaxed anime on this list, meaning if you’re not looking for something too serious to watch then this is it. Assassination Classroom is about an alien teacher who can reap mass destruction and teaches a class full of students assigned to assassinate him. You’re going to get some humor out of this anime and some touching moments. This anime is a little over 40 episodes long but when I watched it I finished it in less than a week. This is a cool little anime to pass the time by if you have nothing else to do.

10.  Yu Yu Hakusho

Yu Yu Hakusho is not the newest anime out and the animation proves it, just be mindful of that if you watch it. Yu Yu is super action packed, you get to see a lot of fighting and you’ll enjoy the characters. Yu Yu is the main character who is a bully and then dies saving the life of someone else and because of that he is brought back to life as a spirit realm detective. You get to follow Yu Yu on his adventure as a spirit realm detective and see the friends he makes along the way. It’s a cool anime to watch and it’ll give you the action, comedy and even the heartfelt moments you might need. From beginning to end this anime is worth the watch.

Well that concludes my list of 10 anime you should watch. Again, this list is not a top 10 list, but it’s clear which one is my favorite. If you’re an avid watcher then you’ll notice these are all pretty mainstream and I did that on purpose. You will find all these anime on Hulu or Netflix but if you don’t have either of those, you can still find them online. If you’re not into anime, these are a great place to start. This list has a little bit of everything, minus romance because I don’t like romance anime although you might get a taste of it within some of these anime. But for now, enjoy these anime and I hope this was enough to make you get nerdy.
