Fashion Tips I Don’t Follow, But Should

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTSA chapter.

I am not one for dressing up. Of course, I would love to wear a pair of ripped jeans with tasteful stiletto heels… I mean don’t we all? Here is my problem, I NEVER HAVE ANYWHERE TO GO! I am not over exaggerating about this, believe me when I say I would love to become a fashionista, but here are my problems:

  • I am lazy
  • Insecure
  • Broke

The three things I think every female can relate to. I am too lazy because I feel like I am not creative enough to come up with an outfit that makes me look COOL and CONFIDENT. I feel insecure at times because, I don’t want my friends to make fun of me for trying to express myself through my clothing. I am broke because, well, I’m a college student and that’s that.

I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY THAT I AM WORKING ON MY CONFIDENCE AND SENSE OF STYLE! I WILL BE THE MOST STYLISH PERSON ON THIS PLANET BY THE END OF 2019. I SWEAR!

Anyway, my current style consists of big sweatshirts, sweatpants, and my Nike Air Max’s (the most comfortable shoes I own!) I can honestly say that I feel VERY confident when I am chilling in my big, soft, and monochrome outfits. BUT, trust me I really enjoy color. Unfortunately, all my comfy clothing is grey, white, or black. If this is your problem as well, get a pair of dope sneakers to go along with this plain outfit. Or a graphic sweatshirt or patterned leggings.

Although I wear the most boring outfits known to man, I still gather inspiration anywhere I can get it. Pinterest is just amazing! I have so many boards of outfit inspiration, categorized by season as well as occasion. Yes, I am crazy! But, unfortunately I am not crazy enough to wear any of the beautiful, amazing, and creative outfits that I have pinned.

ONE DAY! I WILL CONQUER MY FEAR AND ELIMINATE THE FEELING OF MY BLADDER EXPLODING WITH EMBARRASSMENT WHILE WEARING THE MOST FLAMBOYANT OUTFIT KNOWN TO MANKIND (WOMAN-KIND!)

I may not recreate any of the outfits I have saved, but I have learned a lot just by searching for the outfits I WISH I could wear. For instance, everyone must own the staples of the average wardrobe. Whether you’re stylish or not, you must have those go-to items that you can pair with anything and wear multiple times. The plain white tee, a classic, this can easily be thrifted as well as found in different fits and lengths. Cropped, oversized, tight, or loose… the possibilities are endless. THE perfect jeans are essential, high-rise to low-rise, skinny to flared, once again… endless possibilities.

So far, I have both of those staples down, except for the perfect pair of sneakers. Everyone, you have to own a good pair of sneakers, preferably black or white since those colors go with everything. I have a cream pair of Air Max’s that I wear with my casual outfits, but I have realized that I need sneakers for both casual nights and nights out. You have probably heard about the Nike Air Force 1’s, I will be getting a pair soon. Those suckers are amazing wow, they can be paired with anything, like a dress! Is that not insane?

Hopefully, you get the gist of what I am trying to say. DO YOUR RESEARCH! I enjoy reading articles in regards to fashion, from Refinery29. It is basically BuzzFeed for women, only a lot cooler and aesthetically pleasing. What I do not recommend is watching Youtubers, at least not their hauls. I tend to watch some outfits of the weeks’, but that is about it. Here’s why: while watching hauls, you are more inclined to buy what they have bought, most of the time, without seeing it on the person. You will end up buying it and not know what to pair it with. That is why I do not watch hauls for inspiration, I just watch them for fun!

If you have learned something from this, you’re welcome! If not, whoops!
