Ariana Grande’s Memeworthy Lost in Translation Tattoo is a Lesson for Us All

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTSA chapter.

By now, you’ve probably seen the tweets and discussion about Ariana Grande’s new tattoo. I may or may not have spent a few minutes giggling at a few tweets this morning.

Ariana got a tattoo that was supposed to say “7 Rings” in Japanese on her palm, as a tribute to her latest single of the same name. In all actuality, the tattoo did not translate to 7 Rings. In fact, it literally translated to a Japanese style BBQ grill called a Shichirin. Yeah… I know.

She posted a photo of the tattoo on her Instagram. (which she has since deleted)

Since this is the internet, of course people started talking. She also took to Twitter to try and defend herself to those pointing out the mistake.

Here are some of the best memes regarding the tattoo that I found today:

What we have learned here today:

  • Double check the translation when getting tattooed in a language you don’t know well.
  • Make sure you can handle sitting through a tattoo in a painful area (like the palm) before you get it.
  • Google Translate is a hit or miss.
  • The internet is entertaining as hell.

I know she totally meant well with this tattoo, but Ari girl — big yikes.
