“The Hunger Games” Book Celebrates its 10 Year Anniversary

On September 14, 2008 Suzanne Collins released “The Hunger Games”, which means today is officially the ten year anniversary of the book. “The Hunger Games” book became a New York Times Best seller, and was eventually followed by two more books titled “Catching Fire” and “Mockingjay” which completed the trilogy. In 2012 The book was adapted into a movie by Lionsgate, and later the other two books in the series were adapted into three movies. 

“The Hunger Games” is a Young Adult Fiction, which takes place in a future dystopian society called Panem which was formerly known as North America. Panem is split up into twelve districts, each of which specializes in something such as coal mining, fishing and transportation. In addition to the twelve districts there is also the Capitol, which is home to none other than President Snow. In the book each of the twelve districts sends one boy and one girl to fight to the death in what is called the hunger games each year. The purpose of the games is to entertain the citizens of the capitol and remind the citizens of the districts that they are powerless within the society. The book focuses on Katniss Everdeen who finds herself competing in the games when she volunteers to compete in place of her sister Primrose, and Peeta Mellark the other competitor from district twelve. 

Suzanne Collins is the author of the book, she is originally from Connecticut. Collins earned Bachelor’s Degrees in Theater and Telecommunications from Indiana University, as well as a Master’s Degree in Dramatic Writing from New York University. Prior to writing “The Hunger Games” trilogy Collins primary focus was writing children’s books. Some of Collins inspiration for the trilogy was the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur as well as her father’s career in the Air Force and the effects of war. Collins was named one of Time Magazine’s Most Influential People in 2010 and was Amazon Kindle’s first Best Selling Author. 

In honor of the book’s ten year anniversary a special anniversary edition of the trilogy will be released in October. The special edition of the book will include more than fifty pages of additional content. The additional content will include an interview with Suzanne Collins and much more.
