This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTRGV chapter.

Growing up it was rare to see female Hispanic celebrities. Hispanic representation is not something we see often in mainstream media, especially female Hispanic representation. Luckily this has been changing lately. In 2017 we are seeing more and more female Hispanic actresses and singers. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, I’ve compiled a list of a few inspiring Hispanic actresses and singers worth fangirling over!

Selena Gomez

While many college-aged students grew up seeing Selena Gomez as a wizard on, “Wizards of Waverly Place,” she has become quite a successful singer in recent years. Selena’s father is of Mexican descent, and Selena even has cousins here in the Rio Grande Valley.

Zoe Saldaña

Any Marvel Cinematic Universe fan knows Zoe for her role as Gamora in, “Guardians of the Galaxy.” What some fans may not know is that she is originally dreamed of being a ballerina, after training in ballet for many years. She is of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent.

Jennifer Lopez

While some people may have recently seen her judging on, “World of Dance,” Jennifer Lopez is also known for being an incredible singer. Many people may also remember her playing the role of Selena Quintanilla another inspirational Hispanic singer. Jennifer Lopez is the daughter of two Puerto Ricans.

Camila Mendes

The newest Hispanic it-girl plays Veronica on everyone’s new favorite binge worthy show, “Riverdale.” Camila attended New York University, and after graduation landed her role on the hit show. She has talked many times about the importance of being Hispanic, and playing a Hispanic character.

Sofia Vergara

Sofia Vergara is known for her role on “Modern Family”. What many people don’t know is that she started off by co-hosting shows on Univision. The model and actress is known for her accent. She was born in Colombia and came to the United States only to kick off her modeling and acting career.

Shakira

Shakira is known for her high energy, bilingual music and belly dancing. What many people don’t know about Shakira is that music labels often rejected her, because her vocals were very different from most singers at the time. These days Shakira is the best selling South American singer. Shakira is from Colombia and is fluent in Spanish.
