Why Thanksgiving is the Most Underrated Holiday

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTM chapter.

All of my life, Thanksgiving has been one of my absolute favorite holidays. Honestly, what’s better than amazing food and getting to spend time with family? However, it has come to my attention that Thanksgiving is being completely overshadowed, year after year, by Christmas. While Thanksgiving may not have Santa Claus or Christmas trees, it is still a great holiday to celebrate. Here are a few reasons why I believe Thanksgiving is the most underrated Holiday.

The Food

While other Holidays may have delicious food, I think it is safe to say that none of it can compare to the food served at Thanksgiving. In my family, Thanksgiving means a huge turkey surrounded by side dishes. Green bean casserole, cornbread, mashed potatoes, stuffing, the list could go on and on. Then, of course, there is Thanksgiving desert which means pies, brownies and cheesecake. Needless to say, Santa’s cookies cannot compare with a Thanksgiving feast.

Football Season

One of my favorite things about Thanksgiving is getting to cheer on my favorite football team with my family. After laughing together and enjoying all of the amazing food, we move to the living room to watch the game. As someone who does not take football very seriously, it’s always fun to watch my family members suddenly turn into NFL coaches. Sometimes we have to remind them that the players cannot hear them through the television. Needless to say, nothing in the world is better than getting to grab a blanket and relax with your family, after eating the best meal of the year.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Not only does Thanksgiving mean great food and football, but it also means the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! I’ve been watching the parade with my little brother for as long as I can remember. It’s always fun to see the different balloons and colorful floats while trying to sneak a piece of pie or two from the kitchen.

The Weather

While snow on the ground can be beautiful at times, fall has always been my favorite season. The colors of the leaves make for a beautiful background to any family pictures. Plus, fall means blanket scarves, duck boots, flannels and sweaters, which are my absolute favorite things to wear. Most of the time Thanksgiving is the perfect temperature for my younger cousins and I to head outside and play hide and seek or throw a football before dinner.

Spending Time with Family

Thanksgiving, in my opinion, is the one holiday that is truly about family and being thankful for those around you. Sadly, I feel that with each year that passes, Christmas becomes more and more focused on gifts. Thanksgiving is not commercialized, nor are there usually any sort of gifts being passed out. I love Christmas, but it is nice to have a holiday where no one is focused on the presents they are about to open. Instead, everyone is present and enjoying one another’s company. There is no rush, only family and friends enjoying spending time together. That is why I believe Thanksgiving is truly the most underrated holiday.
