Why Dogs Are Better Than Men

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTM chapter.

Growing up, I never was much of dog person. A year ago, however, my family got an Australian Shepherd puppy, and I absolutely fell in love with him. Since then, my dog has become my best friend, and I’m not even sorry. He’s the most loyal companion a girl could ask for, so why would I need a man? I have come to the conclusion that dogs are better than men, and I will explain why.

They are loyal.

Dogs – Aussies in particular – are very loyal to their owners. If you know anything about Australian Shepherds, you probably know that they are “velcro dogs.” This is pretty self-explanatory, but this means they want to go where their owner goes. They even follow you to the bathroom! If that doesn’t show loyalty, then I’m not sure what does.

They love you unconditionally.

Dogs don’t know anything else. To them, you are their everything. You feed them, give them a place to live and give them the attention that they need/want. They don’t care if your hair’s a mess and you’re wearing a stained up t-shirt. They just care that you love them, and they will return that love to you.

They don’t argue with you.

In every relationship, it is inevitable that you’ll get into arguments at some point or another. Be it with your friends, your family or your significant other, it’s bound to happen. However, even when your dog is unhappy, they won’t argue with you. They can’t even talk, so that’s just less drama you have to worry about! This is reason enough to ditch men for a dog if you ask me.

They don’t leave the toilet seat up.

The worst thing to walk into the bathroom and see is a toilet seat that has been left up. With a dog, you never have to worry about that.

They aren’t as needy as men.

No matter how self-sufficient a man is, they constantly need you to do things for them that they can easily do themselves. Yes, you do have to provide for a dog’s basic needs, but they don’t talk you into doing things simply because they don’t want to do it themselves.

They aren’t dramatic when they’re sick.

We all know that when men get sick, they tend to be drama queens. It’s the absolute end of the world, and all they do is complain. When your dog is sick, you don’t have to worry about them being dramatic! If anything, they just want to cuddle you while you relax and watch tv.

You don’t have to meet the parents.

Meeting your significant other’s parents is one of the most nerve-wracking experiences involved in relationships. Will they like you? Will they ask a lot of awkward questions? The list goes on. With a dog, you don’t have to worry about impressing them or their parents!

They help you make new friends.

Men are good for this as well, but if something were to ever happen to the relationship, those new friends would not stay. When you have a dog, people tend to gravitate toward you because they want to meet him/her. This is a good icebreaker and takes the awkwardness out of meeting new people. If that other person has a dog, too, that is automatically something you already have in common and can talk about!

Ultimately, dogs cannot take the place of a man. Emotionally, however, they help you to feel less lonely and make great companions. They’re also good listeners. You can never go wrong with getting a dog!
