What to Do When You’re in Love with Two

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTM chapter.

My entire life I have been the laughing stock for boys. I’m bigger than most girls, I’m not funny, and the only thing I really have going for me is that I have great hair. I have only ever had one boyfriend, and it didn’t end too well. All of a sudden Boy A and Boy B popped into my life at the exact same time. Things would be totally fine, if only I didn’t have feelings for both of them.

After taking some advice from my mentors, well-trusted friends and some family members, I have finally figured out what to do when you’re in love with two.

1. Pick the guy who is your best friend.

My dad has always told my siblings and I growing up, “Pick the person you can see yourself with at 90-years-old, swinging on the front porch swing, drinking sweet tea with.” Pick the guy who you could never see yourself living without, and the person you could talk to for hours and never get bored. That’s the kind of guy you would want to come home to every day for the rest of life.

2. Pick the guy who has goals and dreams.

If Boy A is going with the flow and letting whatever happens happen, and Boy B has a plan for when he graduates school, knows what job he wants and where he wants to live, obviously I would pick B over A. From the advice of trusted company, a man with a plan is determined, responsible and has sure signs of taking care of you for a long time.

3. Pick the guy who shares the same values as you.

For me, my main two values are honesty and loyalty. If Boy A does not value those two things, then buh-bye Boy A. If you and your significant other are not on the same page with this, then complications will arise in the future, and your relationship is likely to take a tumble.

4. Pick the guy who wants to show you off.

Now, I am not saying have a social media relationship. Your boy does not need to post a picture of you on his snapchat story every five minutes. However, if he doesn’t want to hold your hand in public, say goodbye. If he is only treating you as his significant other in private, and not in front of his friends, it’s time for him to go. Pick the boy that treats you like a princess.

I am a pre-vet major who loves to laugh (especially at myself), drink coffee, and spend time with my dog, Cora. I moved from Massachusetts to Tennessee to attend college at UTM and compete for their division 1 rifle team.
