Freshman year can be an emotional whirlwind for these newcomers. Advice can be very helpful and help ease the minds of incoming freshmen. Upperclassmen have got the upper hand in trials and error of college, and maybe they can help the freshmen succeed in their first year here. Just a few simple words of wisdom can bring a little comfort among all the stress within college.

1. Don’t stress the little stuff.

College is hard enough without worrying about what your outfit looks like or if your hair is out of place. You need to focus on you and not worry about what others are saying.

2. Perfect grades are not everything.

You don’t have to have all hundreds to succeed in college. Everything averages out in the end, and if you put in the effort you will do well in your classes.

3. All that BS that high school teachers told you about college professors is not true!

College professors are probably the most chill people you will ever come in contact with. I mean, being honest here, you may very well get an email saying class is canceled because they decided to go on a surprise vacay. Do not be intimidated by them because they are here for you!

4. Keep a planner.

Even though it may seem crazy, you need to keep a planner. College is busy when you are involved with extracurriculars. You may even need to invest in two, because to be honest, that’s how my life works.

5. Do not be afraid to go on adventures.

Be spontaneous and go out and live your life. College is the time where you are learning about yourself. These next four years will be the learning process for your future, so go out and live it!

I am a pre-vet major who loves to laugh (especially at myself), drink coffee, and spend time with my dog, Cora. I moved from Massachusetts to Tennessee to attend college at UTM and compete for their division 1 rifle team.
