Things You NEED to Know Before You Get Bangs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTM chapter.

At some point or another, I think all of us have wondered how we would look with bangs. I feel like a lot of girls had them at around 6 or 7 years old, but my parents never subjected me to that. So I decided, about 2 weeks before classes started this semester, that I would try them out. I did my research. I googled the different cuts of bangs and even did some interesting trial runs with bobby pins and ponytail holders. Here’s what I learned from my whole experience.

Do your research.

Until I actually looked into it, I never knew that there were so many possibilities on how bangs could turn out. Your face shape can make or break whether your bangs look good. Too many girls learn this the hard way.

Understand that bangs are a HUGE commitment.

Once your stylist starts with those scissors, there’s no going back. You’re committed to the look and you’re committed to the time it takes to fix them every day… Which leads me to my next point.

Know that your bangs will never look as good when you style them as they did when your stylist did them.

It took time for me to really learn how to style my bangs. By that I mean it took me awhile to figure out exactly how far down to go before starting to give them a little curl, grasp that they would NEVER look good when I first woke up in the morning, and pick the right angle to straighten them at without burning my forehead.

Be VERY careful when picking where to get them trimmed.

Like most college kids, I have what some people call ‘a hometown original and a college town backup’. If I need a spur-of-the-moment doctor’s appointment, haircut, or chiropractor visit and I can’t drive all the way to my hometown. I have backup places in Martin for those things. Mistakenly, I tried a new hair place… to trim my bangs… needless to say, it did not end well. Make sure your stylist knows what they’re doing or just wait the extra time until you can get home to yours.

I definitely do not discourage anyone from getting bangs. I love how they look on my face (now that they’ve grown back from the horrible trim), and they gave me the change I was looking for. Just make sure you’re careful so you avoid becoming a horror story like I did.
