I chose to stop wearing makeup the majority of the time about a year-and-a-half ago. That’s not to say that I don’t occasionally decide to put on a full face of makeup, but in general, I elect not to wear makeup. This has made me feel happier and freer. Here are my reasons why:

1. It saves time!

I got to set my alarm back a whole half hour when I decided to stop wearing makeup to class. What a relief.

2. When you do decide to do makeup, it’s more fun.

Makeup stops being a chore. When I go out at night or have a date, I get to practice that smokey eye I’ve watched tutorials about, and it’s so enjoyable.

3. Rubbing your eyes stops being a game of chess.

I remember the first time I tried to rub my eye with mascara on. Needless to say, I didn’t know what would happen. It was a bloodbath.

4. It’s good for your skin.

Foundation and powders aren’t inherently terrible, but giving your skin some time to breathe is never a bad thing!

5. It makes you feel much more confident.

No one will ever see my face more natural than without a drop of makeup on it. Fun fact: You’ll still get as many compliments because the makeup doesn’t make you pretty.

I go to Ulta and Sephora just like everyone else. I just got tired of taking my makeup off every day and wondering why I put it on in the first place.

I love to put makeup on for a special occasion. It makes me feel even more fierce than I ever did in the first place, but I’ve found a lot of peace in not wearing makeup. I’m not saying, of course, that you can’t love yourself if you wear makeup. I’m just saying that I needed to love my natural face, and I’ve enjoyed this progress.

I am a sophomore broadcast communications major and theatre minor at the University of Tennessee at Martin. When I’m not in class or participating in events on campus, I spend my time reading, doing yoga, working out, or petting my cats.
I am a pre-vet major who loves to laugh (especially at myself), drink coffee, and spend time with my dog, Cora. I moved from Massachusetts to Tennessee to attend college at UTM and compete for their division 1 rifle team.
