Spring Break Safety Tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tennessee chapter.

So, spring break is right around the corner for students at UT! Everyone is making last minute plans with friends to make the most of their one week vacation from school. When you hear spring break you normally think of the beach, partying with friends, and having the best week of your life! However, most people do not think about the proper precautions that need to be taken when on spring break.  I want to give you all the best tips so that you can stay safe and have a great time on spring break.

1.     Don’t take a drink from a stranger: I know we have all heard this a million times from our parents, but it’s true! Partying on the beach with a bunch of other college kids is fun, but you never know their intentions. Just stick with what you’ve got when it comes to drinking.

2.     Pack carefully: On your way to your spring break destination, be sure to drive safely. Many cops are on the lookout for college students with illegal paraphernalia or alcohol. In my opinion, the smartest thing to do is not bring anything with you and wait to buy it when you get there. However, if you do decide to bring anything, be safe about the way you drive. Starting off spring break with a felony (or even just a speeding ticket) is no way to go.

3.     Drink LOTS OF WATER! : This is another one of those things that my parents used to tell me. But really, staying hydrated can keep you from getting sick. Lying out in the sun already dehydrates you. Add drinking to that and you’re risking getting seriously sick. You and your friends can easily go in on a case of water to keep you hydrated and happy all week long!

4.     Wear sunscreen: Five minutes of being the lame one who puts on sunscreen is better than being a lobster. Being tan is nice, but being cancer-free is nicer. I suggest reapplying every three hours or so. No matter how much sunscreen you put on, you will still be tanner when you leave your destination then when you arrived.

5.      Be Smart: I know spring break is all about having fun, and that is exactly what I hope everyone does! But remember to use your common sense. Be smart when it comes to drinking, strangers, walking around at night, sun protection, etc. We all know the “rules” to good safety. Just be smart and you’ll have a stress-free, awesome vacation!
