Childhood Things That Are Still Comforting in Adulthood

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utica chapter.

First, I want to preface that when I say childhood things I do not mean that these things are necessarily childish, I solely mean that they were introduced to me in my childhood, and my love for them carried over into adulthood. I had a great childhood, it was filled with a lot of fun, some of that came from objects, some came from activities. Though I no longer play with my Barbies or play hide and seek, not everything I used to do is something I’ve given up doing. A lot of things I had when I was younger are even comforting things for me today, a few of these things include:

Stuffed animals

I think stuffed animals are very cute and can be comforting. They are nice to keep on your bed or sleep with if you get lonely. Stuffed animals are great space fillers or decorations because they’re cute, inexpensive, and you can find one to match almost any aesthetic. Though now I don’t play with stuffed animals to the point where they are falling apart as I did in my childhood, I still appreciate their presence and enjoy them as an adult.

Blankets

I may have physically outgrown my smaller childhood blankets, but I still like to have blankets with me. Now, I am not carrying my blanket around with me everywhere like a little kid, but having them handy in the house is nice. Blankets also bring warmth and can be so soft, so they are both useful and comforting. They also make for great decorations for the back of your couch or end of your bed.

Baths

Baths are super warm and soothing and sometimes it feels good to have a nice soak. Whether you are listening to music, a podcast, or just letting yourself not think for a little bit, baths are great for time to yourself. I like baths because you can make them smell nice and they make me feel relaxed. So, though now baths are not solely to get clean like they were as a child, I still appreciate them now in the form of decompressing at the end of the day.

Coloring

My coloring now is arguably more precise than when I was a child, but I still find it a comforting activity. It is nice that coloring is not an intense activity, you can relax your mind as you color. Also, coloring has no rules, you get to pick your colors and designs, you can even choose adult coloring books, or the ones designed for children as those are still fun too. I also really like the feeling of accomplishment you get when you complete a piece, it’s a little activity but it feels good to have what you pictured come to fruition.

Children’s movies

Whether you watched movies from Disney or Dreamworks, or you were more of a cartoon kid, seeing an old favorite or watching reruns on tv is comforting in adulthood. It puts me at ease to know that in these children’s shows the good will always win. I continue to watch every new children’s movie that comes out, they are good movies that are filled with emotion (I always cry, but sometimes that’s what I need) and wonderful messages. Whether you like to enjoy a classic, see a new one, or watch a remake, these movies or shows are all great and can remind us of our childhood.

In summing this up, I want to add that a lot of adults do the things on my list, these things are very popular among all ages. With that, I am not saying that these things are usually reserved for children, just that these are common activities we all shared in our childhood and things that children still do or use today. I want to hold onto things that remind me of good times and when I was younger, and the things on this list come with wonderful memories as well as bring me new excitement. I hope everyone can bring out an old favorite, or get a new favorite thing from their childhood that still comforts them.
