Growing up I never really felt satisfied with my hair texture. I wanted those silky 3b curls that were shiny and bouncy, instead I had dry coils with a ton of shrinkage! I’ve been told all my life that my hair type is hard to manage and won’t grow as quick as others. However, these essential three key techniques I’ve been doing for years says otherwise.
1. Deep Conditioning
This weekly ritual saved my curls so much! I never thought deep conditioning once a week would make a difference in my hair journey, but it surely did. Moisture is vital and type 4 hair needs LOTS of it. This can improve your curl definition, frizz, and breakage by restoring life back into your tresses. I recommend clarifying your hair first (or co-wash) then follow up with a deep conditioner. Leave that in for about 30 minutes or longer, depending on your preference. Don’t forget to repeat this weekly! I prefer Sundays for my pampering procedures, but pick a day that works best for you.
2. Applying products to SOAKING WET HAIR
Following this step has definitely changed my curl definition for the better. After I rinse out my conditioner/deep conditioner I immediately apply my products to my dripping wet hair. This allows my products to have way more slip, which decreases breakage and frizz. You could use any custard or gel. I noticed that these type of products work best for curl definition and hold throughout the week. While applying these products make sure the hair is super wet, this will allow the hair to hold its curl pattern so that it can set for your wash and go!
3. Finger Detangling
Lastly, it is finger detangling. Put down the wide tooth comb! Type 4 hair is the most sensitive and needs special care. I noticed that by lessening my use of the comb that my breakage decreased dramatically. Being able to work through the knots gently with your fingers make a big difference.
These three steps will be life-changing if followed the proper way! The key to seeing a difference is being patience and consistent with your locs.
