Victoria Lim. Award-winning journalist. Internationally-recognized expert multimedia/ multi-platform storytelling. Zookeeper.
Â
Tuesday night, the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) hosted journalist Victoria Lim as a speaker on campus.
Â
An energetic, quick, intelligent woman, Lim explored the possibilities of multi-platform journalism including radio, print, broadcast, and web with the audience.
Â
Previously working for publications such as the Tampa Bay Journal in Florida, Lim got her start in radio, print and broadcast in college. She then moved on to investigative reporting on consumer affairs and sport reporting. Soon she was turning out stories on every platform available.
Â
The ultimate convergence journalist, Lim learned early to take advantage of the multitude of media platforms available and has since become a master storyteller.
Â
During her presentation, Lim held a mock press conference with her zoo of stuffed animals. Audience members could ask questions and Lim would answer with information about “Victoria’s Zoo”. The point of this mock conference was that you can make a multi-platform story out of something as silly as a stuffed animal zoo.Â
Â
Lim encouraged students to take advantage of multiple platforms, but warned that, “Just because I couldn’t put something on all three platforms doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. If it’s a good story, it’s a good story.”
Â
Currently, Lim turns out stories for sports, business, education and travel for television, magazine, news and websites. She also does sports radio.
Â
When asked what her dream team of five would include she listed: a videographer/ editor who is a good listener, someone excellent at infographics, a researcher, a producer to help with logistics, and a frappacino maker.
Â
Lim’s word of advice to students, “I think your opportunities are only limited by your efforts.”
