U of U Homecoming 2012: Red, White and U

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Hey U! Welcome home! Whether a new or returning student, celebrating homecoming at the University of Utah will be sure to acquaint or reacclimatize you with your collegiate (and collegiette!) community. The Alumni Association has planned a week of service, songs, scholarships and sports September 8 through 15. Get out to some of these great events! Take your friends and meet some new ones!

The U Homecoming: Red, White and U 2012 event kicked off Saturday September 8 with the Legacy of Lowell Community Service Day. For those unfamiliar, Lowell Bennion (1908-1996) was a well known humanitarian in Utah, the Associate Dean of Students and professor of sociology at UU from 1962 to 1972, and a well respected religious studies teacher at the Salt Lake Institute. In his name, community volunteers were invited to participate from 8:00 a.m. to noon in some 20 different service projects in Salt Lake; including creating dental hygiene kits, helping with ecological restoration, and making quilts for refugees.

On Tuesday September 11, the tradition of house decorating at Greek Row along with other campus location gets underway at 4:00 p.m. Fraternity and sorority members will decorate their respective residences to match homecoming theme. The Alumni Association and newly elected royalty will judge their efforts. That evening, the Emeritus Reunion will take place at the Natural Museum of History with special guests from the class of 1972.

Watch and listen to the Greeks as they attempt to best each other at song and dance Thursday September 13, with Songfest at 6:00 p.m. in the Union Ballroom. Save your voice, however, for the Crimson Rally at the Union Plaza at 7:00 p.m.

Friday September 14, gather to golf and raise money for deserving students at the 6th annual Scholarship Scramble Golf Tournament to be held at 8:00 a.m. at Bonneville Golf Course. To sign up or for more details, click here.

Get to The Gateway Mall by 6:00 p.m. to witness the homecoming parade followed by the student dance at The Depot at 400 W. South Temple. Last year, 1,500 Utes stomped the dance floor at The Depot, making it the largest event the venue had ever held.

Save some stamina for the Young Alumni Scholarship 5k and Kids Run, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Saturday September 15 at the Alumni House; 155 S Campus Drive. Click here for online registration.

Sure to solidify the student body will be this year’s homecoming football game at Rice-Eccles Stadium featuring our Utah Utes vs. BYU’s Cougars. Last year the Utes creamed the Cougars 54-10. Good luck fighting for dear old crimson this year, team! The game starts at 8:00 p.m., preceded by the pregame tailgate party at 6:00 p.m. Call 801-581-UTIX for game tickets. To register online to tailgate, click here.

Take advantage of the last of the warm weather during homecoming week and celebrate your affiliation with the best school in the whole dang nation! Happy homecoming University of Utah!

Jetta is a fun and spunky communication student at the University of Utah. She has a lot of energy and an outgoing personality- perfect for her work in service coordination, peer advising, the Department of Communication, Express, and of course HerCampus! Jetta loves social media, writing, and learning new promotion and advertising skills. She does not currently drive a Jetta, but hopefully she can afford one upon completion of her degree!
