TOAST: Creative Twists on a Classic

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Want to make your breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert, Insta-worthy, even healthier and more delicious? I know many have turned away from eating so much bread because it is believed to “make you fat,” but on the contrary, carbohydrates are essential in our diets. Glucose is our main energy source. I believe the main culprit of this misconception is the type of carbohydrates that are most common and readily available in our society, such as the processed and bleached wheat and preservatives that make up the surplus of white bread that is consumed.

The key is what bread you’re eating, so choose wisely! Rather than walking down the endless bread aisle and choosing the cheapest, or tastiest looking loaf, try looking at the ingredients. Look for 100% WHOLE GRAIN, that way you’re getting the most bang for your buck that includes all the important vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein. You’re also going to want to look at the ingredients and nutrition facts. The less ingredients listed, the better. Make sure there is also a reasonable (the lower the better) amount of sodium, and also lots of fiber for satiety.

If you’re not looking for something overly healthy, or nutty, I would recommend looking for quality and flavor. The best way to get this would be to go to a place such as Great Harvest, Kneaders, or a local Bakery to get your loaf of choice. Now that you have some tips on choosing your bread, there are endless toppings you can use!

Pro-tip: The pretty, nutty, and more colorful breads, look best in photos and have more flavor to compliment toppings.

Some topping ideas to get you started:

Avocado (super versatile, always good) Ricotta cheese Hummus   Cream cheese Nutella Cookie Butter Yogurt Honey   Honey Butter (honey mixed with butter) Peanut Butter Pesto Spinach Eggs cooked any way Smoked salmon Tomatoes Chives Apples Fruit Honey Chocolate chips Chia seeds Cinnamon sugar Balsamic vinegar or glaze

Toast can be made and eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner and can be just as filling as you want it to be, so here’s some pairing ideas:

Restaurants are starting to embrace the toast hype, and the variety of combinations available is very trendy at the moment, but can be made cheaper/more to your taste if you are at home. If you live in Salt Lake and do want to go have a light brunch with some fun and Insta-worthy toast, I would recommend going to Publik Kitchen, on 931 E 900 S for reasonably priced brunch, and locally roasted coffee. Whether you want a small snack, or something a little more filling, there are endless toast combinations that are healthy, delicious, easy to make and help your loaf of bread last longer (artsy picture optional).
