Tips For Throwing An Instagram-Worthy Holiday Party

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Everybody wants to know how to throw the kind of party with the yummiest snacks, the coolest playlist, and, of course, Insta-pic worthy decorations. No clue where to begin when attempting to throw such a celebration? Read on for tips to make your next holiday party shine.

1. Make sure you have snacks for everybody

Nobody wants to go to a party where they can’t eat anything. Make sure you have treats for any guests of yours that might have dietary restrictions, even if it’s just a different drink option or gluten-free cinnamon almonds instead of chocolate-covered pretzels.

2. Pick a playlist that is up-beat

I would describe my general taste in music as “generic indie chill.” This leads to most of my playlists being too riddled with soft piano and guitar to be of use for any sort of party. Sound familiar? If this is also your playlist prep predicament, take my word for it — have a friend provide a more upbeat playlist.

3. Decorate a cute photo wall

Get cheap decorations (I’m talking less than $10) at your local party supply store. Pick a spot in your house/apartment/dorm with good lighting. Mount the decorations to the wall with putty/tacks/tape, and voila — you have the perfect party photo wall for snapping cute Polaroids of your guests.

4. Faking the fancy cheese plate

Want to really wow your guests with minimal effort? Talk to the specialist at your super market’s cheese counter about what to put on a cheese plate. My roommate did this for our last party, and our guests were decently impressed — and all for zero effort plus a family size box of Ritz.

5. Keep the guest list reasonable

You can’t invite thirty of your sorority sisters, every roommate you’ve ever had, and fifteen cool people you have class with this semester to a party in your dorm. Also, as a college student, you likely can’t afford to provide more than ice chips for that many people. Stick to a small guest list of people who kind of know each other instead, and enjoy the company of a smaller group of friends.

And there you have it, collegiettes! Five tips to make your holiday party stand out this season. Cheers and happy party planning!
