With shows like “Bridgerton” highlighting South Asian culture, it’s time to dive deep into South Asian media, AKA Bollywood. Being born and raised in India, I have been exposed to many Bollywood films and I have found a few favorites. Whatever mood I’m in, there’s a movie for that. With fun musical numbers and beautiful costumes, Bollywood is very unique and fun to experience. If you’re just starting your journey into Bollywood, here are a few personal favorites (all available on Netflix of course).

Jaane tu…ya janne na

This is probably my favorite movie ever. This feel-good film follows friends Jai, Aditi, and four other friends. For their entire college career, Jai and Aditi seem to be in their own world, caring so deeply for each other that everyone thinks they’re actually dating. Feeling gross about that, Jai and Aditi make a bet to find each other significant others. This movie is named after a classic song and asks one question: “how do you know it’s love?” This movie has an amazing soundtrack and is just great overall.

zindagi na milegi dobara

This movie is all about conquering fears. Three best friends go on a bachelor’s trip to Spain to experience things that they are scared of. The title itself basically translates to “you only have one life.” The comedy scenes combined with the terrific character development really pulls you in. I love the message behind this movie and if I ever doubt myself, this is my go to.

jodhaa akbar

This movie is a historical masterpiece. The story of Emperor Akbar is a magnificent one. Being a Muslim ruler in India, he was accepting of all religions, which was unheard of at this time. Queen Jodhaa was a Hindu princess who got married off to the respected emperor. What I love about this movie aside from the story itself are the costumes. The traditional Indian wear is gorgeous and adds to the story. This romance movie will make you believe in love again.

queen

Girl power. That’s it. This film is about a woman named Rani (whose name means queen). Her husband calls off their marriage the night before the big day. Instead of sitting around crying, sheltered Rani decides to go on her pre-planned honeymoon in Europe. Rani dives head first into a culture she knows nothing about. While she’s on her trip, she learns that she doesn’t need a husband. She wants to live and experience more. After this movie, I felt so good and realized that I was just existing, not living. I love this movie and it is a must watch.

kuch kuch hota hai

Out of all of these movies, this one is the oldest. Released in 1998, KKHH stars my favorite Bollywood actor ever, Shah Rukh Khan. SRK plays the main character, Rahul Khanna, who is a player that moves from girl to girl. His best friend Anjali hates this about him, yet they’re still friends. Even through their incessant bickering, they’re always there for each other, and honestly, they’re friendship goals…kind of. The problem starts when Tina, the principal’s daughter, starts college at their school, and of course Rahul falls head over heels for her, right as Anjali falls in love with Rahul. This movie is a classic, from the story to the songs, everyone in India knows this iconic movie. Be warned, if you watch this one, keep some tissues ready.

Bollywood is known for their colorful costumes and fun music. I think’s it’s a great genre to watch if you want something new. Thankfully, Netflix has some perfect movies to watch after you watch these. So grab your favorite movie snack, a blanket, a friend, and enjoy these entertaining films!
