Ted Talks that Every College Student Should Listen To

The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

I know that Ted Talks can be beaten into the ground, especially by professors, but I think that there is actually a benefit to listening to them. There is a reason that they are used so often. The importance of these accomplishments speak for themselves, as they are on Ted Talk, so with this in mind we should take what they say and soak it in.

How to make stress your friend by kelly mcgonigal

College can undeniably be one of the most stressful periods in a person’s life — between trying to balance work, school, and being on your own for the first time, there is so much going on at all times. The “freshman flu” is real, let me tell you. I don’t know a single person that didn’t get sick during the first month of college, which could be due in part to the stress of all of these changes. Kelly McGonigal explains how changing your mind set on stress can lead to more success and less of these side effects.

inside the mind of a master procrastinator by Tim Urban

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arj7oStGLkU&t=282s

Tim Urban describes procrastinating in such an amazing way. I never knew how to describe it to other people before watching this video. His childish analogies make it so fun to watch, but definitely will also change the way you think about procrastinating. In college, procrastinating is self-sabotage, so if this is an issue you have just like I do, listen to this Ted Talk!

the happy secret to better work by shawn anchor

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLJsdqxnZb0

Shawn Anchor is not only a terrific psychologist but also a wildly entertaining speaker. While talking about working hard he still somehow kept his words engaging and even funny. Positive psychology is something that I think every college student needs to think about. It puts your work load and your goals in a whole new perspective.

7 things to do before you graduate college by liz wessel

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNTA9FlJVco

Before listening to this Ted Talk, I thought the speaker would be telling us to “start a business” or “make sure you get good grades.” Instead this talk was about very simple things that most college students do, but Wessel puts them into perspective on how you can use it to your advantage after college. I think these 7 things are very attainable and very useful for the future.

the surprising science Of happiness by dan gilbert

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4q1dgn_C0AU

This talk is one that I wish I had heard right when I started college. College is a really difficult time for most people. We are trying to figure out who we are and how to function without our parents. Not everything goes right in this process and Dan Gilbert talks about how we can choose happiness during these hard times.

the secret of becoming mentally strong by amy morin

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFbv757kup4

Amy Morin has had many losses in a short amount of time. Her ability to be strong and pick herself back up when it is needed is inspiring and admirable. The big lesson that I took away from this talk is that it is okay to be sound, but as soon as you start asking “why me?” and “maybe I am just bad luck” is when you start to spiral. It is okay to grieve, but you can’t just grieve in a pile of self pity.
