Why is safe sex so important?

Safe sex is important because everyone should be able to enjoy and engage in sex without the fear of getting a sexually transmitted infection or an unplanned pregnancy.

Do you have any fun stories to share?

Condom demonstrations are always fun!

Why should more students on campus get involved?

I think more students on campus should get involved with Students for Choice because advocating for reproductive justice is a perfect way to intersectionality advocate for all forms of justice and liberation. I think everyone should be able to embrace their sexualities and learn about their reproductive anatomy and lifestyles with shame or fear. Students for Choice facilitates a space to have these conversations  to learn about safe sex and reproductive justice while embracing our empowering all aspects of our identities.

What are three main goals you have for the spring semester?

1) To host an awesome Sex Week

2) Build more people power for the 2017 legislative session. We need as many people as we can get to lobby for reproductive justice and rights.

3) Create a space of safety, bravery, and hope on campus to make it known that we will always stand together, and that we will never go back.

What are the benefits of being part of this club?

Learning comprehensive sex ed, engaging with the intersectional reproductive justice movement, connecting with like-minded, feminist thinkers, eating free food at all of our events, accessing free contraception, having a great time learning about safe sex, reproductive justice, and how to be a better advocate for all bodies and all communities.

Do you go to events in the community?

Our club is always supporting Planned Parenthood Association of Utah’s events as well as other non-profits who support our reproductive justice platform.

What kind of events to do you hold on campus?

We hold monthly meetings to discuss different components of safe sex and reproductive justice. We hosted many events to inform students about the election and their voting privileges, we table at every social event on campus (crimson nights, redfest, plazafest, etc). We organize an annual Sex Week in February and Take Back the Night March in April. We generally have 2 events per month, a monthly meeting and a social or educational workshop.

How do you go about informing the public about what you do? It can sometimes be a sensitive subject, how do you deal with that?

We stay true to what we believe in, and agree to strongly disagree with individuals who do not believe in reproductive justice. We prefer to use our time to educate, empower, and organize around reproductive justice rather than arguing with our “opponents.”

Be sure to attend the rest of events for Sex Week!

I am a current journalism student at the University of Utah. I have spent my years in college studying, traveling, and writing. I am a campus writer for the University of Utah and have my own blog Beautiful Detour. If I am not on campus I am hopefully off in another country meeting new people...or lying in my bed under a million blankets watching that day's netflix binge.
