Microwaveable Food for Surviving Dorm Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Living in the dorms seems to go hand in hand with being in college. Even if you go to a huge commuter school or you grew up right by the college you chose, dorm living is such a talked-about part of college that most people choose to partake in. There are so many great things that come out of this time, like long lasting friendships and great stories. But there’s also the most dreaded aspect: the food.

Dorm cafeteria food is infamous wherever you go for being downright unpleasant. Some schools are better than others, but let’s be real, it’s still not great. The fact that we don’t even have access to a kitchen doesn’t help either. How are we supposed to ever have food we actually enjoy?!

Though it can’t do everything, the microwave can be a wondrous appliance. With some yummy foods meant for the microwave, and your convenience, you can actually have some tasty meals.

Here are some of my favorites!

Trader Joe’s gnocchi

You can get these delicious potato dumplings two ways: regular potatoes with cheese sauce or sweet potatoes with sage and brown butter sauce. These are so good that I am literaly dead.

Chicken Taquitos

Yummy, quick, simple. I usually get them from Smith’s. and they are a super easy snack.

Cake in a Mug

You can find tons of recipes for cake in a mug all over Pinterest. Some are basic with only a few ingredients, and some can get really fancy. It just depends on what you’re in the mood for and also what ingredients you have!

Trader Joe’s Greens, Beans & Grains

This meal is kind of like a stew, and even though one of the main components is kale, it is so darn good. Not to mention, it’s healthy too with lots of vitamins and nutrients that we all probably don’t get enough of.

Mac & Cheese

The ultimate comfort food, no matter what form or brand you have, mac & cheese is always good. Whether it’s Easy Mac or a frozen entree, it is an absolute must have.

Trader Joe’s Steelcut Oatmeal

I make this constantly when I’m running late and have no time to go to breakfast at the HC. There are several packets in each box so it will last forever, and the maple and brown sugar flavors are so tasty.

Happy eating, collegiettes!
