How to Feel Like a Freshman the Day After a Party

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

I remember when I was a freshman and the day after a party I felt bright eyed and bushy tailed, well as much as I could on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Little did I know what a true hangover really would feel like. Now, all I can hope for is to not feel like death the day after a good night. Who doesn’t love a mixed drink brewing in a pumpkin full of sugar that covers up cheap alcohol? Or how about that gin bucket your kitty ears will be a mile deep into? Unless you’re a super human freshman, the next day is going to be rough. I definitely don’t have an entire day to recover from a few hours out…hangovers? Aint nobody got time for that.

Now this is not the type of article that will tell you to not drink wine with whiskey or “beer before liquor never sicker.” Or this is the worst one: “prevent getting drunk” No, if there is a cute guy who offers you a shot of Jack and another one who offers you Smirnoff, your going to take both of them and then some.

Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it increases how much you need to pee. You know “breaking the seal”?  Instead of holding it until you feel like you are going to burst, take advantage of this time to drink water. Once your night is starting to come to an end drink as much water as you can. As well as having a glass waiting for you once you wake up. Trust me, there is nothing better than seeing a full glass or water bottle next to your bed in the AM.

Pre-Carbs

When your blood sugar levels start to drop your liver comes into action and produces more glucose from stored carbs. While drinking, your liver is occupied metabolizing alcohol. Thus your blood sugar levels stay down which causes fatigue and irritability the next day. If you have a good amount of stored carbs before drinking, your liver will function more efficiently. Also the more gressy the better, this will help line your intestines thus helping alchohol not go strait into your blood stream. Help your body out and have a pizza, pasta or a burger and fries for dinner pre body shots.

Post-Electrolytes

You got your junk food fix the night before so the morning after is the time to revitalize your lost electrolytes. The best way to do this is sip on a smoothie. If you don’t have a blender or don’t want to stock up on smoothie supplies, pick up a few Naked Smoothies (premade smoothie drink). Another suggestion is Pedisure drinks. They may be for kids but are full of electrolytes. Just make sure to tell the guy that might be sleeping over that you don’t have a child.

Spa Day

Rather than going on a vigorous run the next day, (I don’t do that in a good state let alone hung over) sweat it out an easier way. If you have a gym membership, hit in the steam room, sauna or hot tub, put a cooling gel eye mask or a sheet mask. I recommend the coconut mask by Tony Moly, honey (nourishing and balancing) or ginseng (toning and revitalizing) sheet mask by Sephora Collection. Depending on the severity of hangover, I try to make it to a hot yoga class. Check out Core Power yoga, they have a student-discounted rate. If you feel like staying a few steps away from your bed, get into a nice hot shower or bath. This is not affective if you don’t continuously drink water throughout the day.

Sleep

Sleep is important. The reason you are tired is probably because you got in your own bed or someone left your bed at 4 AM. If you plan on raging, be aware of your schedule for the day after. We cannot be responsible ALL the time so if you aren’t able to sleep your day away, coffee fixes everything.

By following these hangover tips, I hope you aren’t felling too terrible the rest of your day. When you see a freshman with a pep in their step it wont be as taunting.
