Her Interview: Linguistics Club

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

The University of Utah is filled with so many unique clubs that offer signature experience to not only enhance your time on campus but prepare you for future careers. This week we got the chance to get to know a little bit more about the University of Utah Linguistics Club. We had no idea how much they had to offer and the ways any student can get involved!

What exactly is the Linguistics Club at the U?

LCU is a forum for discussion about research and news relating to linguistics and language and will work to encourage socialization and communication in the University of Utah Linguistics Department and support undergraduate research efforts

Who can join this club?

This is a club that is open to anyone as long as they register as a member

How many members do you have?

There are currently 15 registered members, but also 32 unofficial members who use the club’s social media sites.

What do you guys do at meetings?

Meetings occur twice monthly and we gather in a room in the Language and Communications Building to discuss current research going on in the field of linguistics. We also have meetings with guest professor speakers who present on topics of interest to club members. One of my favorite topics so far has been the relationship between linguistics and computer science (computational linguistics) and how we can use our linguistics skills to get jobs in tech.

Why should people who are not familiar with linguistics join this club?

For those who are unfamiliar with linguistics and the things we study, joining the Linguistics Club is a great way to get a look into the world of studying languages as a science. Many people don’t know what linguists do or how it is relevant in our world, but there are many ways that linguistics is important.

What are the benefits of learning a little bit more about linguistics?

The most obvious is the field of language teaching and learning, which is increasingly a huge part of communication in our globalized world today. Linguists study the way languages are structured and also the way the humans learn those structures and patterns and research in linguistics in the past as contributed significantly to the way in which languages are taught in schools today. This is just one of the many ways linguistic studies and research are used, but students can come join in the meetings to find out more!

We hope you enjoyed learning a little bit more about the Linguistics Club, and check out a meeting!

I am a current journalism student at the University of Utah. I have spent my years in college studying, traveling, and writing. I am a campus writer for the University of Utah and have my own blog Beautiful Detour. If I am not on campus I am hopefully off in another country meeting new people...or lying in my bed under a million blankets watching that day's netflix binge.
