Healthy, Inexpensive Food on Campus

     Now that spring is just around the corner I know what you’re thinking, “how in the world will I be ready to fit into everything that’s in style for the new season?” Don’t fret, lovely ladies, I have the solution.  One of the simplest ways to change your body and get rid of that unwanted ‘muffin top’ is to literally stop eating those muffins. Don’t stop reading muffin lovers, what I mean by that is to stop eating the over processed versions of muffins in the vending machines. It’s important to take time and read and be able to say what the ingredients are in your delectable snack. For example, if there are more than 10 ingredients contained in your food of choice, you should probably find another (healthier) alternative. Keep this small rule of mine in mind: “the longer the list of ingredients, the longer it’ll stay on my body.”

Now, I know what your next question is, “well, how do I know what ingredients to avoid?” Once again, I have the answer. Keep an eye out for these major destructive ingredients: sodium nitrite, hydrogenated oils, and monosodium glutamate. These ingredients are usually added to junk food to increase shelf life, give food an artificial color, and add flavor to typically bland foods.

Finally, the trick to avoiding all of these traps on campus. Since the majority of your day is usually spent on campus, you can’t possibly eliminate every form of junk food. You need the energy to get you through the long day. I’ve searched long and hard for healthier yet cheap food alternatives on campus for the past few weeks and I have come to one surprising conclusion: the campus bookstore. If some of you don’t know, there is actually a small convenience store located in the bookstore. Here, you have a plethora of options, including vegan desserts, to choose from. All within your nonexistent student budget!

Try out a couple of these tips and both your wallet and your waistband will thank you.
