Easy and cheap college recipes: Cheese Buns

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

As an involved student, I know what it’s like to prepare a dish for a potluck on a budget, last minute of course. My last student potluck included about seven store-bought desserts, soda and one salad. Not good. We definitely need some better side dishes, and here’s one that’s easy, fast and cheap!

Ingredients:
• Hot dog or hamburger buns, 6-12 (or more if you need, each bun makes 2 pieces)
• Shredded cheddar cheese, about 2 cups per 6 buns

Directions:
• Preheat oven to 550°, set it on broil
• Separate the tops and bottoms from each bun, then place the halves on a cookie sheet
• Sprinkle on the cheese, as much per bun as you feel is needed
• Pop them in the oven for about 5 minutes, watching closely so they don’t burn.

Easy enough! Since each bun makes two pieces of the cheese bread, 12 buns could be enough for a group of 24. Buns are about $2.00 for 6-8, and a bag of shredded cheese is about $2.00 as well. That adds up to about six bucks for a yummy, home-cooked side dish that’s better than store-bought cake! Enjoy, ladies!

Jetta is a fun and spunky communication student at the University of Utah. She has a lot of energy and an outgoing personality- perfect for her work in service coordination, peer advising, the Department of Communication, Express, and of course HerCampus! Jetta loves social media, writing, and learning new promotion and advertising skills. She does not currently drive a Jetta, but hopefully she can afford one upon completion of her degree!
