A Drivers Guide to Utah Drivers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Utah: Home to the greatest snow on Earth… AND the world’s worst drivers. Whether it comes from the driver’s education, or lack thereof, or if it has just been perpetuated by the culture of horrific drivers for years and years, Utah Drivers tend to ignore about 50%-90% of traffic laws. Why? Who knows what these crazy people are thinking while they speed around almost causing accidents every turn but here are the top traffic violations of the average Utah driver?

Yellow lights

What they mean: Slow down and prepare to stop, unless you are already in the intersection then proceed with caution.

What Utah Drivers think it means: Speed up and send it through the intersection and most of the time send it through the already red light.

Blinkers

What they mean: To indicate a lane change or a turn. To help other drivers know what your intentions are on the road

What Utah Drivers think it means: What is this weird flashing light that makes a ticking sound???

Right and Left Lanes of the Road

What they mean: Slower drivers stay to the right, Drivers driving the speed limit or passing use the left or middle lane.

What Utah Drivers think it means: Which one can I use to block the most amount of traffic from getting to where they need to be going?

Speed Limits

What they mean: Do not go faster than this or you will get a ticket.

What Utah Drivers think it means: Go this speed or 5 mph over, You only get tickets if you’re driving 10+ mph over the speed limit.

Merging

What it means: Entering the freeway using the on ramp time to get up to speed and to enter the freeway. Use blinker to indicate entrance onto regular freeway lanes.

What Utah Drivers think it means: Who is this flippin frigg driver trying to get in front of me? I need to speed up and not let them in. They could get where they’re going before I do. Also what is that weird flashing orange light on their car? Their car must be broken.

Texting

What it means: It’s illegal. Don’t text and drive you could cause an accident and people could die.

What Utah Drivers think it means: I’ll just use voice to text and then change the entire message texting regularly. It will be fine I won’t crash the car… *Crashes car*

These are just some of the many reasons why Utah drivers are the worst, but don’t worry there are many other rules of the road that these crazy humans choose to ignore while driving. Just remember: When driving in Utah remember to drive like you’re wearing a blindfold and this is the first time you’ve ever been behind the wheel of a moving vehicle and you will fit in just fine!
