Dear Astronomers: Stop Trying to Make Ophiuchus Happen

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

The sky is changing. It was not the same as it was thousands of years ago. In fact, it literally changes every night from morning to evening. However, this has nothing to do with being an Aries or a Capricorn or a Cancer, and it absolutely has nothing to do with Ophiuchus. I am not even going to humor you all on the silly rumor going around that there is a new zodiac sign. There isn’t.

Every year or so, astronomers come out with this exact claim, because they hate astrologists. It’s pretty peeving, if you ask me, and I understand that they don’t respect or appreciate what astrologers do, but they are totally attempting to undermine them.

Astronomers, you don’t have to like that astrologers originally used the constellations in your precious sky to determine the twelve signs. You can continue to roll your eyes at anything related to Mercury Retrograde. You can even refuse to believe that you are anything like a Taurus – whose strongest attribute is that of stubbornness, might I add. Even so, please let astrologers do their thing just as they let you do yours.

The sky changes every single night. How could the signs possibly stay the same throughout all of time and history?

I’m going to let you in on a huge aspect of astrology that is overlooked because, no, astrology does not scientifically or mathematically make sense, but that is the fun part! Astrology is mysterious and doesn’t need to make much sense logically. It brings people together and, weirdly, it works. Astrology has to do with the seasons and the pull the moon has on the tides. The stars are just where the constellations were at the time they were invented. It was decided among the first astrologers to write out the constellation Ophiuchus from the zodiac because it was too small to even make a difference. I personally think that this is why Sagittarius’ tend to be such wild cards, but I won’t get in to that today. The point is that after the twelve zodiac signs were identified, they stuck.

So if you really connect with being a Pisces and now some Astronomy-buff has told you you’re suddenly an Aquarius, don’t trip! Your sign is the same as it was years and years ago. It is the same as it was when you were born. Sorry, astronomers; you don’t own the sky.

Don't make this ginger snap... just kidding. I'm usually pretty nice. I am a happy-go-lucky, Avril Lavigne lovin' and poodle obsessed San Diego girl. I think I'v been handling the cold weather pretty well! Communication is my degree of choice, although maybe someday I'll be a world reknown astrologer... One last thing: I'm pretty sarcastic.
