Campus Celebrity: Alexis Matthews

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Alexis Matthews embodies everything that it means to be a Collegiette. She’s stylish, intelligent, driven, and seriously hard working. She works for the Boys and Girls Club, is the Vice-President of philanthropy in her sorority, volunteers her time to ASUU, and still makes time to do an interview with us! Get to know this incredible woman a little better.

Age: 20

Hometown: Price Utah

Major: Human Development & Family Studies

Her Campus Utah (HC): What is your sorority’s philanthropy and what made you want to be the VP of it?

Alexis Matthews (AM): Pi Beta Phi’s philanthropy is Read, Lead, Achieve and its purpose is to promote children’s literacy. I wanted to get involved because it’s something I’m very passionate about and it sounded like a good and fun way to give back to the community.

HC: How long have you been in this position?

AM: Since January 2015. So I’ve hosted two philanthropy events which raised over $2,000!

HC: That’s incredible, congratulations! So, you said you were passionate about children’s literacy, is that because you’ve worked with kids at the Boys and Girls Club?

AM: Yeah, I mean I’ve worked with kids my whole life and they are the best. They are the most genuine, loving and forgiving people. Being able to interact with them and watch them grow is a really great job. And seeing the impact I can make on these kids is priceless.

HC: What advice would you give to students who were interested in volunteering?

AM: Hmm. Probably “Do it.”

HC: Great Advice!

AM: Right!? No, but really there are so many opportunities and resources. Working with kids will change your life.

HC: What’s your dream job? Do you think all of your volunteering will help you in that field?

AM: Well I want to work for The Club writing grants and doing program development. So my job now and the volunteer work I do will definitely help!

HC: Last question, which we’ve been thinking of since literacy was mentioned. What’s your favorite book?

AM: That’s a great a question! I’d probably say Oh! The Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss

HC: That’s probably the best answer you could’ve given!

AM: I’m a sucker for a classic.

Well there you have it, philanthropic superstar Alexis Matthews! Make sure to reach out to us if you’d be interested in volunteering with the Boys and Girls Club!
