7 Songs to Brighten Up Your Morning

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

We know your bed has never felt more inviting than when your alarm goes off. If you share our hatred of getting out from under the covers, never fear! Her Campus Utah made you a morning playlist of songs that aren’t over-played on the radio and are perfect for an early start. Put these songs on your iPod or Spotify playist for some positive vibes to kickstart your day!

“Black Out Days” – Phantogram

“If I could paint the sky all the stars would shine upon in red.”

Phantogram has no shortage of excellent songs with which to start your day (“Mouthful of Diamonds”, anyone?), but “Black Out Days,” off of their yet-to-be-released album Voices, is a force to be reckoned with.

“Drunk in Love” – Beyonce ft. Jay Z

“Oh baby, drunk in love we be all night.”

Sing it, Bey! No one can resist a collaboration from the queen herself and rap god Jay Z. “Crazy In Love,” another one of their duets, is also a great choice for your morning.

“Bloodflood” – Alt-J

A wave, an awesome wave, that rushes skin”

Alt-J’s flawless record An Awesome Wave does not so much as blend elements of surf rock, Bali, psychedelic folk, and dubstep as throw them against a Velcro wall and sees what sticks. The band’s track “Bloodflood” consists of a heavy-duty baseline that will leave you ready to take on the world before you have even finished putting your pants on.

“Crystalised” – The xx

“And you’ve got the faith that I could bring paradise.”

“Crystalised” is a fitting addition to The xx’s collection of indie-folk gems. The “dancy” chorus of this song is a surefire way to brighten your day no matter how heavily the snow is coming down outside.

“Human” – Daughter

“Buried deep within there’s a human. Despite everything, I’m still human.”

Daughter has created a track that shifts effortlessly from vigorous acoustic rock to dreamy ambience and back again. Plus, the first couple of lyrics — “Woken up like an animal, teeth ready for sinking” — prove that songwriter Elena Tonra hates getting up just as much as you do. You’re not alone!

“FU” – Miley Cyrus ft. French Montana

“I was over it the second that I saw her name.”

Miley Cyrus’ tongue may be getting a lot of attention, but the voice behind it isn’t being forgotten. No one can deny that her music is all the rage right now, as her new album Bangerz did not disappoint. “FU” is a great anthem to just belt out. So go ahead, take a break from getting ready and give yourself a concert!

“Kids” – Mikky Ekko

“Kids are gonna do what they want.”

“Kids” counteracts Mikky Ekko’s well-known melancholy ballads with a parade of happy synths and a motivational ode to the power and freedom that come with being young. If you listen carefully, you might just catch yourself excited to start your morning.
