10 Ways You’ve Struck Roomie Gold

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

In the 4-year span of college, you will go through SEVERAL roommates. I’m at the end of my junior year and have had like, 11. Whether you switched roomies because it is a new semester, they legit drove you crazy, or switched dorms—you WILL go through a lot of roommates. It’s sometimes hard to find someone that gets you enough to be comfortable around each other, but different enough to keep things interesting. But every once in a while, if you’re lucky, it just works and you’ll be BFFs forever.

After my many, many roomie experiences, I bring to you 10 ways to know you’ve hit the jackpot and stick around them longer than the last roommate!

1. They won’t judge you for not showering for several days in a row. But they also won’t be afraid to tell you that you’re disgusting and stinky.

2. You know and hang out with all of the same people, which makes for really great pillow talk. You know what the boys and bi*ches did not only last week but 5 years ago in high school.

3. You guys know each other’s study habits and are always down for a homework pow-wow. They will call you out on your crap when you don’t study for your huge midterm you keep complaining about.

4. You’re each other’s safe line. You can always count on your roomie to make sure you’re alive when you don’t come home at night by text or compulsively checking your location on Find My Friends.

5. There is an unexpected ability to tolerate the messes that cover your room 24/7. Or the ability to do an awesome job at hiding your frustration because you know they have too much going on to worry about laundry.

6. They know your class and work schedule better than you do. Not only is this good to ensure you wake up for your 7:30 am midterm but they know when and where to find you in case of emergency at any point in time.

7. When one of you has plans, you both have plans. Anything from monotonous errands to a  family holiday, you won’t have to go alone if you don’t want to.

8. You don’t have to travel across campus to get bestie time in. You’re popping in and out all of the time you never go longer than a few hours without seeing each other… and the times you aren’t hanging out you send countless snaps and texts.

9. You can trust their honest opinions and it’s easy to not be offended because it came from them. When they say not to wear the floral crop top, sequined pants, and high top sneakers… they mean it. They have your best interest at heart.

10. You guys are each other’s mom away from home. The constant nagging followed you from home when they triple check to make sure you took your cold medicine or called grandma for her b-day.

Together, you’ve been through the bad, good, and the ugly. You don’t, and can’t, hide anything from each other. They’ve made the college experience that much better with the late night laughs, being the shoulder to cry on, and their never-ending love and support. Sometimes you find the good people, and when you do, don’t let them go!
