I promise, it isn’t as hard as you’d think.
The first time I had my eyebrows done was in eighth grade. My mom set out with a pair of tweezers to tame my unruly brows; I wanted to have those skinny little pencil line eyebrows everyone had in 2010. Fortunately, my mom refused to do more than clean up the edges. I thank her for that everyday now that natural, big brows are back in style. Some time in high school, she and I moved from tweezing to waxing and let me tell you, it’s so much faster. Every month or so, my mom would wax my eyebrows (I’ve never had it done at a salon). When I moved out of their house to go to college, I realized my mommy couldn’t do it for me anymore, so I taught myself. I highly recommend learning how to do it yourself; it saves a lot of money compared to salon waxing. Here are some tricks of the trade I’ve picked up in my experiences.
1. Know your options
There are wax strips (which I find confusing) and wax you heat yourself, this type comes in a little pot and you can melt it in the microwave or on the stove, depending on the variety. This is my favorite; they sell it at Target and it’s only $5!
2. Apply the wax in the direction of hair growth
Apply to small sections and let it cool. Then, hold your skin tight and pull quickly in the opposite direction to remove.
3. Be careful not to burn yourself
Read the package instructions for heating and test a bit of the wax on your arm before you go for your face. I have only burnt myself once, and it actually happened when I was taking the hot wax out of the microwave, and I dropped the container.
4. Get comfortable with your abilities
Start out by just removing stray hairs before you start changing the shape of your brows. The space between eyebrows is a nice starting off point. I have never (knock on wood) had a major eyebrow mishap because I chose a very conservative approach for quite some time. You can always go smaller, but making them fuller again isn’t quite so simple. Anyway, big brows are in right now.
5. There are stencils to help you keep your brows symmetrical
I haven’t tried these actually, this is the one thing in life I do free-hand, but the brand I use includes them in every box.
6. It doesn’t hurt that bad to rip it off
Like ripping off a bandaid…
